Josh Byrd Gets First Feature Win in Late Models at Columbia Motorsports Park!
by Marty Little

LAKE CITY, Fla. - Josh Byrd held off the late race challenges of Al Beckleheimer, Jr and raced to his first career late model victory at Columbia Motorsports Park Saturday night.

Byrd grabbed the lead at the outset of the 30 lap run with Beckleheimer the man on the move in the late laps. Battling for the top spot on the white flag circuit, Beckleheimer looped his mount in turn one as the yellow flew to regroup the field. Ray Wheeler took advantage of the late race restart to claim second money over Beckleheimer, former track champion Michael Haigh and Jimmy Andrews.

The non-stop 25 lap Florida modified main saw Johnny Mitchell wheel his brand new Jim Douglas Chevrolet backed open wheeler to the top spot. Brian Campbell turned up the wick to claim second money ahead of J.F. McClellan, Jason Garver and Charles Seroki.

As always the 25 lap street stock headliner was a rock 'em, sock 'em affair with Kelly Barber pacing the dozen car field for the first nine circuits. At that point Barber and Brad Fiene tangled and Tim Conrad took the point and raced to his first victory of the new season. Dave Barber, Jr was second in front of Seroki, Fiene and Ronnie Crawford.

Ronnie Cook paced all 20 laps of the pure stock feature but his car could not make it through post-race tech and runner-up Marty Wood was declared the victor. Russell Patterson, John Roling, Josh Bedenbaugh and Scott Dobek, in a Hornet divison car, rounded out the top five finishers.
