IT'S TIME TO RACE!!
February 13, 2003
Night 6 of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing
by Jane Smith
SAMSULA, Fla. (Feb. 12, 2003) - The night air was still a little chilly but as the nights dwindle down, the action remains hot at the one-half mile fast track at New Smyrna Speedway. The Mini Stocks are gone and the Sportsman division has come in for three nights of racing along with the Super Lates, NASCAR Tour Type/SK Mods, FL/IMCA Mods and Late Models.

Wayne Parker sat on the pole for the 20 lap feature for the Open Wheel Modifieds but before a lap could be made, the yellow flew for a car that spun in turns 3 and 4. A total restart was in order with Jerry Symons quickly taking the lead over Parker.

Shaun Stroble brought out the yellow on lap 7 when he spun on the bottom of turns 3 and 4. On the restart, Symons held the point with the best racing being between Jason Boyd, Brad May and Wayne Parker. The three went nose to tail until Boyd passed Parker for the second spot with May running on Boyd's shirttail for third. Symons took the checkered for win number 4.

Following Symons to the checkered was Jason Boyd, Brad May, Wayne Parker and Mark Vandevender.

Larry Osteen sat on the pole for the 20 lap caution free event for the Late Models. Osteen quickly took the lead on the green followed by Mike Murphy, Jason Boyd, Kirk Hooker, and Scott Watts. By lap 6, Boyd had taken over second putting Murphy third.

Osteen and Boyd go wheel to wheel for the lead slightly touching in lap 15. Boyd powers his machine to the point and never looked back. Hooker lost ground and found himself back in the pack as Watts took over fourth and A.J. Curreli ran fifth.

Lap 18, Joey Miller powers past Curreli and takes over the fifth place spot with Boyd taking the checkered followed by Larry Osteen, Mike Murphy, Scott Watts and Joey Miller.

George Boch sat on the pole for the 50 lap feature for the NASCAR Tour Type/ SK Mods. But it was the #00 Ted Christopher who powered his way to the lead on the green. Joining in the field for the first time during the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing was Eric Beers.

Lap 8 the yellow was thrown for Kevin Goodale who spun in the top of turn 4. The race was restarted with Christopher on the point followed by Tim Arre, Ed Flenke, Jr., Eric Beers and George Boch. Flenke is on the move taking over second from Arre and on lap 12, Christopher finds himself suddenly in the second place postion as Flenke takes the point.

Adam Horwith brought out the yellow on lap 21 as he spun in turns l and 2. On the restart, Christopher spun at the top of turn 2 bringing the yellow out once again. Christopher pits and comes back out before the race is restarted, joining the field in the rear.

On the restart, Flenke holds the point followed by Eric Beers, J.R. Bertuccio, Rob Summers and George Kent Jr. But coming up fast is Christopher who takes fifth, then third, then second and Flenke finds his hands full of Christopher on his tail.

Beers brings out the yellow on lap 45 for a spin rejoining the field in the rear with Christopher ready on the restart to retake the point. Christopher makes the pass and again takes the lead and the win for win number three. Following Christopher to the stripe was Ed Flenke, Jr., J.R. Bertuccio, Rob Summers and Tim Arre.

Christopher stated in Victory Lane "We have had a fast car all week. The car came in good tonight. I would like to thank my car owner and my team for getting me here and working so hard."

Wayne Anderson had the pole for the Super Late Model 30 lap feature but due to a bad start, the race was restarted with James Powell III quickly taking the point followed by Anderosn, Jr. Hanley, B.J. McLeod and Scott Hantz. Alittle lead swapping and Anderson retakes the point with Jr. Hanley right on his tail in second as Powell falls to third.

On lap 14, Hanley passed Anderson and the crowd went wild. But two laps later, lap 16, the yellow comes out for Jeff Emery and Bruce Gowland who get together coming off the bottom of turn 4 and spin. Hanley holds the point on the restart followed by Anderson, Powell, McLeod and Hantz.

Chris Fontaine brought out the yellow as he found himself up against the turn 2 wall. Fontaine was fine but his car went in on the dreaded hook, done for the night. Hanley holds the point once again on the restart but another short green lap period as Chris Moore's throttle cable seemed to stick coming off the frontstretch sending him hard into the turn 1 wall. Moore is fine.

On the restart, Hanley finds his mirror full of Anderson's red, white and blue machine and Anderson finds his mirror full of James Powell's machine. As the top five go nose-to-tail, Hanley's clutch lets go as he slows around the track and makes his way into the pits done for the night after running up front for most of the race. The crowd is extremely disappointed.

Anderson takes over the point and gets his second win in the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing. Following Anderson was James Powell III, B.J. McLeod, Scott Hantz and Louis Mechalides.

Anderson stated in Victory Lane, "Nothing like being an oreo cookie between Jr. and James. Both Jr. and James have had great cars and if Jr.'s had not broken, I am not sure if I would have won. Again, I owe it all to my engine builder for a great engine."

Brett Boltmeyer had the pole for the 20 Lap Sportsman event but it was Earl Beckner who put his sleek #3 Sportsman on the point with Boltmeyer, Bob Cumbou, Doug Callebs and Paul Colgan in the top five.

Jim Elliott Jr. brought out the yellow on lap 3 as his cockpit was engulfed with smoke from a possible broken oil line. Elliott was pushed into the pits and the race was restarted with Beckner in the lead.

The red flag came out on lap 4 as Doug Callebs and Buddy Brown got together at the top of turn 1. Callebs spun and before Brown could check-up, ran straight into the stalled car of Callebs. Both drivers were fine but their cars were done for the night.

On the restart, it was Beckner, Boltmeyer, Paul Colgan, Bob Cumbou, and Ron Lufcy in the top five. Terry Wright brought out the yellow as he spun at the top of turn 4 and found himself against the wall and with a flat tire limping into the pits and done for the night.

Beckner took the checkered followed by Brett Boltmeyer, Paul Colgan, Ron Lufcy, and Bill Love.

Night 7 will see the Super Late Models in a 50 lap feature along with the Late Models, NASCAR Tour Type/SK Mods, FL/IMCA Mods, Sportsman and the Allison Legacy cars. Racing action will begin at 7:30 p.m.
