Norstrom Tops Florida Modifieds at Columbia

By Marty Little

LAKE CITY, Fla. - Ford mounted Donnie Oden grabbed the lead from Doyle Boatwright on lap 19 and sped to the win in the 25 lap late model stock feature event Saturday night at Columbia Motorsports Park.

Boatwright led from the start until mechanical woes slowed him and allowd Oden and Jody Turner to slip into first and second. They ran to the checkers in that order ahead of Boatwright, David Hussey and Robert Young.

Greg Nordstrom proved the best of the Florida modified open wheel set as he hustled past Gene Owen on lap four and never looked back in winning the 20 lap main. Roger Webb shadowed Nordstrom and claimed runner-up money over Mike Batten, Steve Brickhouse and Owen.

The race in the street stocks was Dave Barber and Charles Seroki but the first time feature winner was Billy Layne. Barber and Seroki dominated to lap 19 on the 20 lap run but a double spin and a restart saw the leaders tangle on the final circuit and it was Layne who picked his way throught the melee for the win. Ronnie Crawford, Seroki, Barber and Shawn Lang completed the top five.

William Jerkins led all 20 laps of the pure stock main but his car owner refused a post-race engine inspection and the win fell to Matt Stafford over Russell Patterson and Nate Ingram.

The Florida Pro Series late models visit the half-mile oval this week (June 1) for the Sunbelt Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep 125.
