Schrieir Ocala 4cyl. Bomber Winner | by Diana Brake Ocala, FL, June 16, 2001 - The Ocala Speedway was high and dry although surrounded by summer showers, and eager fans were treated to a great night of racing.
The Ford of Ocala Jr. Cups opened the evening's event. Victory Gentry (39) sat on the pole for the heat and won, she retained the pole for the race. Elizabeth Gentry (60) sat on the outside. The drivers all started well, but Conner Baxley (64) found an early opening to gain second position and shortly after that, he gained the point. Eddie Kilbury, Jr. also moved up to take second. Conner Baxley won the feature by driving a great race. Eddie Kilbury, Jr. finished second followed by Elizabeth Gentry and Victory Gentry.
The Coca-Cola Four Cylinder Bombers filled the track. A.J. Schrieir (98) sat on the pole, and Steve Gallager(39) sat outside. Everyone jumped well and Schrieir grabbed the lead. On the second lap, John Nabor (3) got into Schrieir a bit and sent Schrieir spinning. Nabor was sent to the rear and Schrieir regained his position. Schrieir and Gallager battled hard as the two of them pulled way ahead of the pack. During the next eight laps, Nabor smoothly regained enough positions to be a real threat to the two leaders. Nabor still had some catching up to do when a yellow flag closed up the gap for him. Nabor and Gallager fought for a lap or two, and eventually, Nabor prevailed. But, time was running short and A.J. Schrieir drove his car hard to take the checkered flag. John Nabor finished second followed by (39), and Ric Fort. After tech, John Nabor was declared the winner, Ric Fort finished second followed by Richard Kuhn, Kyle Helt and Bill Brezner.
The WTRS Pure Stocks were rearing to go. Mark Mitchell (71) sat on the pole after winning the heat. Roger Brass (81) sat on the outside. After the green flag flew, Brass quickly took the lead, but while coming down the backstretch, he spun and lost a tire in turn three. Sparks flew high and the free tire rolled all the way around the track to the pit entrance. On the restart, Frank Buchanan (07) moved up to the outside pole. The first three laps were examples of some excellent racing. 'Ya should 'a been here!' Four cars, Mitchell, Buchanan and Pete Close (86), and Moose Alderman (7) ran three deep through turn four, then the lead changed hands on every lap. First Buchanan had the point, then Close, then Buchanan, and the whole time Mitchell and Alderman were right on their tails. The running order settled out and Buchanan found himself leading the pack. Alderman followed in second with Close and then Mitchell not far behind. One yellow flag flew, but the front-runners weren't affected. Frank Buchanan held on to take the checkered flag. Moose Alderman finished second followed by Pete Close and Mark Mitchell.
The Steven A. Bagen Sportsmen stormed from the pits. Tommy Roberts (44) sat on the pole, and William Edwards (08) sat on the outside. Roberts jumped well as did Mike Wilson (79) from the second row. Only one yellow flag flew during racing, and this just for a small bit of oil so racing was not interrupted very much. Tommy Roberts held the lead from wire to wire even though Mike Wilson never gave him a moment's rest to finish second. William Edwards finished third followed by Charles Kopach and Doug Levesque.
The Bobby Allison Legacy Cars came to town tonight. Billy Dentmon (60) sat on the pole, and Jeff Conyers (00) sat outside. These good looking late model miniatures raced hard with only one yellow to slow the action. Conyers took the early lead for several laps. Dwayne Dentmon(14) was moving strong up through the pack and he finally claimed the lead. Dwayne Dentmon raced clear to take the checkered flag. Jeff Conyers finished second followed by Andy Chisholm.
The Budweiser Modifieds roared out of the pits. Eddie Kilbury (71) sat on the pole, and Red Vann (15) sat outside. The first lap was tough as Kilbury and Vann battled for first, but then Kilbury took the lead. This didn't last more than few laps though as Red found an opening on the inside and squeaked by Kilbury. Once out front for good, Red began to open up some breathing room. Kilbury continued in second with Raymond Vann a car length back in third. Troy Robinson (0) and John Clair (44) rode fourth and fifth. The feature ran clean and Red Vann carried the race to take the checkered flag. Eddie Kilbury finished second followed by Raymond Vann, Troy Robinson and John Clair.
