SARA Late Model Checkers to Boyd | by Ken Willis Jason Boyd of Orlando roared to the Pepsi winners circle in the Sara Series 100 lap Limited Late Model feature event at DeSoto Speedway Saturday night and cruised away with the $2000 winner's purse after leading 80 of the 100 laps. "We ran pretty good in practice and qualified third," Boyd said. "But then I drew the eight pill." Boyd worked the outside lane until lap 20 when he overtook Sonny Hughes of Bradenton, who pulled the pole position for the start of the race. Going into turn three Boyd kept the outside and fired onto the front straightaway with the lead. It was all he needed. "I like this track a lot, I haven't raced here in about two years," Boyd said. "It's almost like running Orlando. We've done pretty good there. We won the Super Late Models and the Modifieds a couple of weeks ago. The only person to win both. Hopefully we can keep it going."
Boyd edged out fast qualifier Wayne Morris of Mulberry for the win. Morris set fast time at 14.72 seconds (91.67 mph) with Bobby Beauchemin of Davey taking third place in the event. "We were a little tight on the long runs, we might have had something if it wasn't" Morris said. "Jason was definitely the man tonight. He was a little better than all of us so we had to settle for second." Chad Allman of Apopka claimed top rookie in the one hour, five minute race with an eighth place finish and Dusty Robinson of Lakeland came away with the Hard charger award for the evening.
More than ten caution flag filled the first half of the race but the spins and collision eased off in the last 50 laps. "Jason got out there and made it happen when it counted early in the first half of the race," Morris said. "I tried to be a little patient and he was coming hard. I kind of got stuck in there behind those guys. Our car was running good but we need to get a little better. Still it was great racing. It can't get any better than this."
In other races: Dale "Rock" Reigle of Sarasota took his first checkered flag in the Selective HR Solutions Sportsman division. "This is a fast old hot rod," said Reigle. "The cautions bothered me but we held on." The former boxing champion led the race from flag to flag with pressure coming from Jim Frake of Sarasota. Still, Reigle gave credit to the people who helped him the most. "I want to thanks all the fans who come out and support us each week," he said. "Without them we wouldn't be here." Another well-like local driver Brian Teeters of Palmetto took third place.
In the Comcast Street Stock Scott Woodland of Bradenton roared to the Pepsi winners circle in the 20 lap event with Chet Roberts taking second placed and Rich Clouser of Grant placing third. "This is what's it all about," said Woodland who moved up from the Pure Stock. "It's been a long time coming. Thank God we did it. It never did feel like it got easy."
Rocco Rannallo of Bradenton took his second win in a row in the Callaghan Tire Open Wheel Modifieds. Caleb Reschar of Palmetto placed second and Bill Davis of Wauchula third.
Chip Gaines of Sarasota collected the win in the Manatee Lumber Modified Minis. Steve Martin of Pinellas Park placed second and Tony Elrod Jr of Lakeland took third place.
Jesse Dutilly of Bradenton collected the win in the Q Auto & Injury Attorneys Stock Minis. Robert Haygood of Bradenton placed second. Shane Whitbeck of Sarasota took third place. David Tart took the checkered flag in the Legends and Joe Kay of Pompano, Fl placed second.
