Legends Winternationals Goes to Georgia Racer. | Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Georgia made a clean sweep in the Pro division of the Legends on the final night of the Winter Nationals at DeSoto Speedway. "Sometime when you get out front you have to slow down to go faster," Davenport said. "This track is smooth and that what I had to do. Eric (King) was coming on strong but got held up in lap traffic and that helped."
As if scripted Davenport's third win again came over Eric King of Hartsville, South Carolina and 15-year-old David Regan of Stockbridge, Georgia.
The driver's skill in the Legends also showed as Tommy Jordan of Hartsville, South Carolina claimed the win the final Master's class Legends race. Jordan once again edge out Cotton Spry of Salisbury, North Carolina and James Roderiguz for his second win in a row. "I got out of racing for a while but Eric King bought this car and put me back to work," Jordan said. "I want to thank the people of Florida, we've enjoyed the series and we hope to come back next year."
Young Chase Miller, 14, of Canton, Georgia who played hookey from school this week to run the Winter Nationals won just his second Legends race to close out the Winter Nationals. "I tried to keep them behind me as best as I could and I ran as fast as I could," Miller said. "I felt like I had to get up high to get up speed and it worked."
Saturday's race also included 100 laps of Modified Mini action with Robbie Yoakum of Inverness driving a hard race to take the win over Ronnie Allen of Port Charlotte and Randy Koon of Lakeland. "I just tried hang in there for the first 50 lap then take what I got," Yoakum said. "It worked out for me."
The Mini Stock 50 lap event featured young Todd Freed Jr. of Bradenton returning to last year's winning form. Freed drove a hard race behind Tommy Huffstutler of Bradenton for most of the race. At the end Huffstutler's car began to run loose allowing Freed to drop down inside and pass for the lead and the win.
Next Sunday, February 25th DeSoto Speedway officially starts the racing season with the 2001 Icebreaker featuring 125 laps of Pro Late Model racing, 50 laps of Open Wheel Modifieds and the DeSoto Speedway Pro Trucks in a blazing feature event. Grandstand gates open at noon.
