Williams Takes Street Stock 100 At Columbia Motorsport Park

by Marty Little

Coming out of semi-retirement, veteran Larry Williams took the lead for the last time on lap 78 and hustled to a well earned victory in the Street Stock 100 Sunday afternoon at Columbia Motorsports Park.

The special event, a Lee Faulk/Columbia co-promotion, saw 25 of the best street stocks in the state work their magic on the big half-mile oval. Ray Wheeler started from the pole and paced the first 22 circuits before Williams put his mount on the point with Tim Conrad in his shadow. Conrad finally made his move for the lead on lap 59 and remained in command until lap 77 when he went to the pits with engine problems. With Conrad gone it was Williams in the lead again with Wheeler now doing the chasing.

Wheeler's challenge ended with engine woes on lap 92 as Kevin Durden gained the runner-up slot but could not mount a challenge as he chased Williams to the stripe. Williams earned $2,000. for his efforts and led Durden, Charles Seroki, Clinton Keen, William Edwards to top five finishes. Six through 10 were Mike Wilson, Randal Jackson, Brad Price, Pete Close and Wheeler.

The 20 lap support event for pure stocks fell to Matt Stafford after a hard battle with L.H. Davis and Harry Stickle.
