GRENIER AND VULIPUS GIVE ONE HECK OF A SHOW | November 10 was the last night of points for the 2001 New Smyrna racing season, except for Super Lates which will finish their's on November 17. Some of the best racing of the year was seen on this night.
Conrad Grenier #01 and Rick Tumey #55 were down to the wire. Very close in points with both deserving the Championship for all their hard work. Grenier won the race but Tumey did win the Championship but it was the race between Grenier and "Mr. Mini-Stock" Ted Vulipus that was the hit of the night. For laps unending, these two were side by side, never touching each other both staying in their own grooves. To put it, "it was a Kodak moment at the finish line as the two were so close, you could not tell which had the win." Now that was racing at it's best. In spite of losing the #7 of Tim "Missileman" McPhail and the #8 of Trish "Icelady" Gray, the race was very good. The #55 had to make a quick pit but was able to work his way back from the rear to finish third. Also Rex Christensen #v3 and the #81 of Jamie McCague did a fantastic job to round out the top five. Both Grenier and Tumey were torn down at the end of the night for the Championship and both were found legal as Tumey got the 2001 Championship for the NSS Mini-Stock.
Mike Murphy's #26 had the pole for the Late Model race and was going for his first win in awile when he hit the turn 1 wall and had to retire from the race. This gave the lead to the #63 of Chris Lawrence who had Chad Pierce's #57 behind him until the #90 of Robert Anderchek got pass Pierce and took second place. Top five were: 1. #63 - Chris Lawrence, 2. #90 - Robert Anderchek, 3. #57 - Chad Pierce, 4. #25 - Timmie Todd, 5. #76 - Bobby Mara.
Jim "Hoot" Flynn had the pole for the open wheel modifieds and won from the pole. Bobby Blake in the #00 tired his best to take the lead but just did not have enough steam to pass the #57. Justin Henderson in the #16 did a great job in third and getting closer to his first win. Rounding out the top five were the #7 of Mark Vandevender and the #19 of Tom Root, winner of the Mod race the night before at Orlando SpeedWorld.
In the Sportsman division, it was the #47 of David Gibbs on the pole but Ron Lufcy's #07 took the lead from the start. But it was the #111 of Donnie Williams passing them all and taking over that position. Top five were: 1. #111 - Donnie Williams, 2. #07 - Ron Lufcy, 3. #47 - David Gibbs, 4. #30 - Dale Clouser, 5. #25 - Don Tracy.
Super Stocks saw Mike Soukup on the pole but not in his #45 but in the #57. Mike did a great job in a borrowed car and did not put one scratch on it - good job Mike. But it was the #15x of Bill Spade who wanted that win and passed the #30 who was leading. The #30 got shuffled back which put the #32 of Bill Stacy in second. Top five were; 1. #15x - Bill Spade, 2. #32 - Bill Stacy, 3. #35 - Tim Ewing, 4. #2 - Ron Whaley, 5. #28- Chris Pedulat.
The Strictly Stock race had a bunch of cars but I missed the race due to the teching of the mini-stocks. The #38 won followed by the #11, 08, and 27. I apologize to all you guys because you had a huge car count and your race is important but I just got in the middle of something and missed you. I am sorry.
Next week is the warm-up race for the new Goodyear Late Model series - 50 lapper.
