Six New Winners at Volusia Speedway Park | VSP MEDIA
Barberville, FL (October 3, 2009) You could not have asked for a more perfect night than Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park. No rain in sight, great fans, plenty of racecars, and six brand new feature winners and one unhappy first time winner. As the old saying goes, "it ain't over until the fat lady sings", held true for Steve Mooers. Mooers won the Street Stock feature only to be dq'd in tech and lost his wonderful feeling of that first feature win. Mooers proceeded to tear the top off the trophy he had to return and mess up his first feature winner hat. The win was given to Wally Schneider after tech.
Heat wins went to P.J. Wiggins and Dale Murray in Modifieds; Ken Hall, Sr. and Mike Haney in Sportsman; Dan Kerr in Mini Stock; Davey Wolf and Rusty Robinson in 4 Cylidner Challengers; David Higgs and Wally Schenider in Street Stocks; and Bobby Peterson and Augie Burtham, Jr. in Thunder Stocks.
P.J. Wiggins was the first new feature winner as he took the Modified win. Greene had the pole but it was Dale Murray who jumped to the early lead with Wiggins behind him. By lap 2, Wiggins had taken the point and once he was there, there was no looking back. Wiggins worked his way up to a quarter mile track lead over the rest of the field and it looked like he was going to lap the whole field if a caution had not come up for Rick Scott and Barry Sheffield drawing the field back together for the restart. It was P.J. Wiggins all the way to the checkered followed by Dale Murray, Barry Sheffield, Tiny Greene, and Chuck Gustafson, Jr.
Mike Haney had the early lead in the Sportsman feature turning it over to Drew Smith for awhile. Smith was able to keep the lead up until the halfway point when Joey Haslauer powered past Smith for the point. Then it was a battle between Haslauer and Smith to see which one would get their first feature win. Smith gave it his all but could not pass Haslauer neither on the inside or outside. Joey Haslauer held on to take the checkered over Drew Smith, Paul Sheed, Steve Sheed, and Marc Kinley.
Mini Stocks saw Dan Vogel take the early lead in their feature race but by lap 2, it was Dan Kerr leading the way. With Kerr on the inside, Vogel on the outside after a lap 3 caution, it was Kerr takikng the point over Vogel. Kerr then began to build a fifteen car lead over Vogel and the rest of the field and as they say, "never looked back" as he took the feature win over Dan Vogel, Tommy Saunders, Mark Taylor, and Lance Lee.
Rusty Robinson gave it his best shot at trying to win the 4 Cylinder Challenger feature. Robinson lead early on in the race until RJ Glaser put the heat on Robinson and took over the point. As Robinson and Glaser went side-by-side after several restarts for cautions, Glaser did not budge from that number one position. But Glaser found a new challenger in Mark Comitale who passed Robinson and took over second and put the heat on Glaser. By lap 11, Comitale was the new leader and never looked back taking his first feature win over Rusty Robinson, Davey Wolf, Vinnie Richards, and pole sitter Casey Feaster.
Steve Mooers not only had the pole for the Street Stock feature but lead every single lap until the checkered. Right behind Mooers in second was Wally Schneider who never once let the heat off of Mooers. This was a total caution free race and the only reason anyone dropped out during the race was mechanical problems. David Higgs ran third the whole race and was able to finish third in spite of a last lap flat rear tire. No one thought Higgs would make it but he did as he was very determined. Getting his first feature win, after tech, was Wally Schneider followed by David Higgs, Pat Buckley, James Smith, and Mark Maresca.
Thunder Stocks were the last feature of the night and it was all Dave "Augie" Burttram, Jr's race. Burttram was able to take the lead on the initial green and inspite of several cautions, was always able to take the point on the restart. Jared Bennett gave Burttram a run for his money but was outpowered by Bobby Peterson who took over the chase of Burttram in second. Burttram, Peterson, and Bennett ran first, second, and third for most of the race until Tom Hughes turned up the heat and took third away from Bennett. Dave "Augie" Burttram claimed his first feature win over Bobby Peterson, Tom Hughes, Andy Hicks, and Jared Bennett.
