***Story Revised 9/23 for Rob Underwood
Barberville, FL (September 22, 2009) It is FINAL POINTS night this Saturday at Volusia Speedway Park. All divisions will be racing - Late Models, Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stock, Thunder Stock and 4 Cylinder Challengers. It will be a happy night for some, others not so happy.
Leading the points in the Late Model divsions is Lawton Minchew with 745 points. Only 60 points behind Minchew is Stanton Mills with 685. Standing third in points is Richard Ferry with 590 points. Only 42 points behind Ferry is Darrell Padgett with 548. Standing at fifth with 500 points is Chris Freeman. Completing the top ten in points are Joe Kump, Donnie Chappell, Racin Jason Davis, Mark Whitener and David Clegg.
Can Minchew win the Championship?? Be there to find out!!!
Rob Underwood had high hopes of winning the Modified Championship and is leading the points. However, after last weekend's suspension for the actions of one of his crew members, he though his dream had gone up in smoke. But the good news is that it has NOT. DIRTcar officials have determined that the incident on 9-19 did not involve Rob Underwood and he will be racing this Saturday night. Because this was a DIRTcar /UMP Sanctioned event and DIRTcar members were involved in the incident, everything was escalated to DIRTcar officials for a final determination on penalties. Individuals directly involved with the incident will receive penalties from DIRTcar.
Underwood goes into Saturday night's Modified race with a 19 point lead over second place Dale Murray. Underwood currently stands at 850 points to Murray's 831 points. And you can be sure of one thing, both Underwood and Murray want the Championship and they will be racing as hard as they can for it.
With 768 points, it is Jamie Carter in third in the Modifieds. Only 82 points separate Carter from Underwood and a good night for Carter and a bad night for Murray or Underwood, could really effect the Championship. Racin Jason Davis, who never has more than three wheels touching the surface as he goes around the corners at Volusia, stands fourth in points with 745. Charlie Macnichol rounds out the top five in points with 657 points and only a one point lead over sixth in points Larry Burkins.
Completing the top ten in points for the Modifeds is Jimmy Carter, James Smith, Rick Scott and Darron Smith. Will it be Murray, will it be Jamie Carter?? We find out Saturday night.
Shaun Daugharty leads the Sportsman points with 910 followed by Alan Peacock with 843, a 67 point difference. Garret Stewart stands third with 836 and only 7 points behind Peacock. Steve Shead has 821 points and only 15 points behind Stewart. Aaron Barsness, our newest winner last week, stands fifth with 785 points.
Danny Vogel, Jr., Drew Smith, Dan Lane, Sr., Shane Williams, and Levi Cribbs complete the top ten.
With the top five so close in points, especially second thru fourth, a good night, a bad night, can make all the difference in finishing positions. This will be a good one Saturday night and one you WON'T want to miss.
Grady Christian has already won the 2009 Street Stock Championship with 1175 points. But the rest are still up for grabs Saturday night. Standing second in points with 972 it is Charlie Macnichol. Right behind him with 940 points it is Steve Mooers. Thirty two points separate second and third place. Fourth is Bubba Christian, who was missing in action last weekend, with 844 points. Completing the top five is Phil Brown with 787 points.
D.J. Nobles, James Smith, Steve Oldaker, Mick Kulak, and Michael Tovet complete the top ten.
The newest divison this year at Volusia Speedway Park has been the Thunder Stocks. We have watched it grow from four cars to many, many more. Leading the newest division in points and the 2009 Champion is Scott Mooers with 901 points. Richard Calmes stands second with 609 points but he better watch out because Matthew Schell is only 3 points behind him in third with 606 points. Schell has won the last few races and with another good night, could finish second in points for the year.
Robert Shrunk has earned 489 points placing him fourth in the division. Skip Land, who moved from asphalt to dirt after running Strictly Stocks at New Smyrna Speedway, completes the top five with 436 points.
Eddie Tovet, Donnie Nobles, James Sullivan, III., Sean Babcock, and Todd Roberts complete the top ten.
Tony Laporta looked to be a shoe in for the 4 Cylinder Challenge Championship but had to leave for awhile to take care of his mother giving the points lead over to Danny Lunn with 1166 points. Sixty eight points behind Lunn with 1098 is Gilbert Epsy. RJ Glaser has 1035 points to place him third followed by the returning Tony Laports, who won last Saturday, with 1005. Double header winner Dalton Strehle stands fifth with 969 points.
Davey Wolf, Daniel Laird, David Ladrie, Gilford Williams, and Brian Smith, with his truck, round out the top ten.
