Robbie Cooper wins Joslin Memorial 50 at Orlando SpeedWorld | KARNAC STAFF
Orlando, FL (June 19, 2009) Twenty of the best Modifieds made their way to Orlando SpeedWorld Friday night for the Joslin Memorial 50. Friday night traffic kept a few from making it to SpeedWorld in time for qualifying but they were given a few hot laps before race time. Kurt Jett topped the speed charts with a 14.335 followed by Robbie Cooper with a 14.336. Doug Moff set third fastest time with a 14.349 followed by Alan Bruns with a 14.420 and Shain Held with a 14.464. Jett pulled the five pill putting Shain Held on the pole for the 50 lap race. As the green flag flew, Held quickly jumped to the point followed by Alan Bruns, Doug Moff, Robbie Cooper and Kurt Jett. But it was one of those fast green flag laps as the yellow came out for Joe Gerrard who spun in turn 1. Gerard suffers some damage to the front end but is able to continue on rejoining the field in the rear for the restart. Held once again takes the point on the restart followed by Bruns, Moff, Cooper and Jett. Cooper puts the heat on Moff and takes over third as Moff finds himself going backwards as Chad Pierce moves into fifth. The yellow comes out for Mike Trocki who spun high in turns 3 and 4. Trocki is fine and rejoins the field in the rear for the restart. With Bruns on the inside, Held on the outside, Bruns takes the point followed by Held, Cooper, Jett, and Pierce. Cooper takes over second as Jett holds on to his coattails for third, Pierce fourth and Held fifth. Jett puts pressure on Cooper for second but Cooper shuts the door. The yellow comes out for David Hite who has spun on the backstretch. Hite is fine and goes to the rear for the restart. After two tries on the restart, Bruns takes the point over Jett, Cooper, Held and Pierce. But it is a very, very short green as the cauton comes out for a mass pile-up in turns 1 and 2. Involved are Mark Emberson, Joe Gerard, Sr., Michael Williams, and Phil Morrison. The green comes back out as Bruns once again leads the way over Jett, Cooper, Pierce and Held. But it another very short green as the red comes out for another pile-up in turns 1 and 2 involving Skip Honaker, Matt Jarrett, and L.B. Skaggs. Jarrett has to be towed in as Honaker drives into the pit area for some quick crew attention. The safety crew go to work cleaning the track and it is back to racing. With Bruns on the inside, Jett on the outside, Bruns takes the point on the green followed by Jett and Cooper who are going side-by-side for second and Held and Pierce who are going side-by-side for fourth and fifth. In the end, it is Bruns, Cooper, Jett, Held and Jerry Symons. Symons puts the heat on Held and takes over fourth as Held finds his hands full of a hard charging Jason Garver for fifth. Held gets loose and has to let off to correct opening the door for Garver to take over fifth. Held eventually finds himself back in ninth. Running order is Bruns, Cooper, Jett, Symons, Garver, Moff, Matt Wheeler, Pierce, Held and Mark Emberson. Joe Gerard, Sr. brings out the caution again as he spins in turns 3 and 4. David Hite takes his machine in at this point for some crew attention. With Bruns on the inside, Cooper on the outside, the green does not wave due to some track conditions on the restart. Seems the track has some fluid on it which caused the leader to have a bad start calling for a second restart. Bruns once again takes the point on the green followed by Cooper, Symons, Jett and Moff. Suddenly the fans get a good show on what local short track racing is really about as Garver and Moff touch wheel to wheel bringing smoke into action. Both control their cars and keep them off the wall as Moff takes fifth and Garver sixth. Running order now is Bruns, Cooper, Symons, Jett, Moff, Garver, Pierce, Wheeler, Emberson, Williams and Honaker. Pierce tries to put heat on Garver but Garver quickly shuts the door keeping Pierce in seventh. Once again, the yellow comes out for another pile-up in turns 3 and 4 involving Doug Moff, Michael Williams, Skip Honaker, and Jason Garver. Moff is in, Williams is in, and Garver is in. With 15 laps to go, the green is shown once again however it is another short green as the yellow comes out for Moff (who rejoined the field in the rear after a quick pit stop), Skaggs, and Gerard, Sr. The three have gotten together on the restart on the frontstretch. Gerard is towed in as Moff sees his night end on the back of the rollback. Twelve cars are left for the restart as Bruns is on the inside, Cooper the outside. This time Cooper takes the point on the restart followed by Bruns, Symons, Jett and Pierce. The caution comes out for debris on the track. On the second restart, Held and Honaker have gotten together on the frontstretch as Honaker is being pushed backwards down the frontstretch by Held. A very strange site to see. Cooper once again takes the point on the restart but it is another very short green as Matt Wheeler and Kurt Jett have gotten together in turns 1 and 2. Both drivers are fine but done for the night. Eight cars are left now for the restart as Cooper is on the inside and Bruns on the outside. Cooper takes the point but the caution is thown again as Alan Bruns and Skip Honaker get together. Bruns tapped Honaker on the restart causing Honaker to go hard into the turn 1 wall. Honaker has extensive front end damage and calls it a night. Only eight cars out of the original twenty are left for the restart as Cooper leads the way over Symons, Pierce, Held, and Bruns. Cooper hangs on and takes the checkered winning the Joslin Memorial over Jerry Symons, Chad Pierce, Shain Held and Alan Bruns. OFFICIAL RESULTS JOSLIN MEMORIAL 50 JUNE 19, 2009
