A Complete Restart for the Powell Memorial this Friday | by BJ Cavin
ZUBER, FL.- The United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series and the historic Ocala Speedway will run the 14th Annual Powell Memorial this Friday, June 19th, at the track located just north of Ocala in the community of Zuber. And as fate would have it, now even more top late models are expected to be on hand for the event.
Traditionally the prestigious Powell Memorial late model race is run the first week of June at Ocala Speedway, but this year nature forced a change in that tradition. Heavy rains on the morning of June 5th washed out any chance of a race, and event organizers quicklyy settled on a new date of June 19th. And the traditionalists will note that although the date may be two weeks later than normal, it is still a June event and not rescheduled for months later as other races have been.
The rescheduled event also opened the door for some racers to compete that were unable to make the traditional race date. Ocala Speedway owner Michael Peters says that several racers have now added their names to the list of competitors scheduled to appear, while the entire original list has stated their intentions of returning on the new date. The United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series is in its second year of touring the southeast, and has a reputation for attracting large car counts and providing exciting action. Peters says that 50 or more cars may end up vying for the starting spots in the night's 75 lap main event, with $5000 going to the winner.
In addition to the late models, Ocala Speedway's most exciting and competitive division will also be hitting the clay. The Amsoil V8 Thunder Stocks have provided weeks of highly competitive action in 2009, and should prove to be a worthy complement to the late models of the Powell Memorial race. And a change has been made to the original schedule as the Mini Stocks will compete as well. Ocala Speedway's Mini Stock division has remained strong this season, and has not seen any one racer asserting dominance as was the case last year.
The pit gate will open at 2PM for competitors while the grandstand gates will open at 5PM. Heat races will begin at 8PM, with qualifying and practice held earlier for those who may wish to watch. Overnight camping is also available with prior notification to Ocala Speedway by calling 352-622-9400. For directions to Ocala Speedway, or more info, please visit www.OcalaSpeedway.com.
