Tank Tucker tops Modified 50 at New Smyrna Speedway | KARNAC MEDIA
Samsula, FL (May 16, 2009) It was a warm springtime night at New Smyrna Speedway, as fans, drivers and staff said goodbye to Ms. Peggy Kincaid. "Ms Peggy", as she was fondly known, was one of the original staff of Clyde Hart and worked in the tower as a scorer for forty something years. She was the tower "bulldog" as she kept people orderly and did her job. She was the first to say "hello" to a stranger and welcome them to the tower and her beloved racetrack.
Ms. Peggy died suddenly this week at home with her beloved cats and will be missed by many. She had a heart of gold and was always bringing treats for the tower personnel and keeping order so the tower did not get too loud. She now watches over us with her beloved husband Dan and you can be sure that alot of us have one special guardian angel in heaven. Rest in peace Ms. Peggy and know there are many who will never forget your smiling face.
Fourteen Modifieds made their way to New Smyrna Speedway for the 50 lap feature. "Rocketman" Wayne Jefferson set fast time followed by Tank Tucker, Alan Bruns, Jerry Symons, and Skip Honaker. Jefferson pulled the 11 pill putting the #51 of Earl Beckner on the pole.
As the green flag waved, Beckner pulled out to the lead followed by Joe Yarborough, Mav McDonald, Tank Tucker, and Jerry Symons. But it was a very short lead indeed as the caution came out on lap 2 for Yarborough and Dave Riley.
The race goes back green as Jerry Symons leads the way over Tucker, Bruns, Jefferson and McDonald. Tucker passes Symons taking the point as the yellow comes out again for John Zidek and Yarborough in turn 4. The cars are realigned and go back to green as Tucker leads the way over Bruns, Jefferson, Symons, and Robert Deal. Bruns passes Tucker and takes the lead when yet another caution is thrown for Dave Riley and John Zidek who have gotten together on the backstretch. Both drivers are fine but done for the night.
The restart sees Tucker take back the point followed by Bruns, Jefferson, Symons, and Deal. Bruns looks to pass Tucker but Tucker quickly shuts the door. Held looks to pass Deal but Deal shuts the door. Beckner takes his car to the pits, done for the night. As Tucker and Bruns leaves the field having their own two car race, it is Jefferson in third with Symons far behind and Deal far behind Symons. Held gives it another try on Deal for fifth but Deal once again shuts the door. It is Tucker, Bruns, Jefferson, Symons, Deal, Held, Skip Honaker, Mav McDonald, Don Keithley, and Bobby Baldwin.
Tucker begins to build a huge lead over Bruns with the only two car racing going on is between Deal and Held. Jefferson, who suffered some damage in an early caution, starts to reel in Bruns and takes over second as Bruns goes to third. Symons then sees that Bruns is not running quite right and takes advantage as he takes over third and Bruns goes to fourth. It is now Tucker, Jefferson, Symons, Bruns and Deal.
Tucker laps Baldwin and Keithley and puts them both a lap down as Baldwin passes Keithly for ninth. Ten cars are left as Tucker leads the way over Jefferson, Symons, Bruns, Deal, Held, Honaker, McDonald, Baldwin and Keithley. It is now evident that Bruns has some issued with his car as he slows and slides backwards. Tucker takes the checkered winning the 50 lapper followed by Wayne "Rocketman" Jefferson, Jerry Symons, Robert Deal, and Shain Held.
In other action at New Smyrna, there were twelve Late Models in the field for their 30 lap feature with Zack Donatti on the pole. Donatti quickly took the point on the green followed by Davey Gibbs, Kevin Henry, Alan Bruns, and Bobby Joe Woodley.
But before the race could even really get started, the yellow comes out for a mast pile-up in turns 1 and 2 involving Randy Dye, Todd Allen, Kevin Henry, Bobbby Joe Woodley, Chad Akins, Greg Skyta and Jessica Murphy. Todd Allen and Bobby Joe Woodley got together causing the mass pile-up. All drivers were fine but Dye, Allen, Henry and Woodley were done for the night.
Henry later went to the hospital for x-rays as his chest was hurting from the hard impact. But this was definitely not the way these drivers wanted their night to end and start.
The pile-up is cleared, the track is cleaned and the green goes back out as Alan Bruns leads the way over Davey Gibbs, Brad May, Brett Woodley and Chad Akins. Akins puts the heat on Woodley and takes over fourth as Woodley goes to fifth. Then Jessica Murphy puts the pressure on Woodley and takes over fifth as Woodley goes slightly sideways and ends up in seventh.
The caution comes out again for Brad May and Davey Gibbs as they get together in turn 1. Both go on pit road for some crew attention and rejoin the field in the rear for the restart. Bruns once again takes the point on the green followed by Akins, Donatti, Murphy and May. May passes Murphy for fourth as Davey Gibbs takes his machine to the pits, done for the night.
Akins puts the heat on Bruns and takes over the point putting Bruns second followed by Donatti, May and Murphy. Akins takes the checkered followed by Alan Bruns, Zack Donatti, Brad May, and Jessica Murphy.
Butch Herdegen held the point for most of the Super Stock feature but in the end it was Scott Smith taking the checkered. Ernest Stickle had the pole for the feature but it was Herdegen who quickly took the point on the green followed by Stickle, Richard Goodrich, Mark Tracey, and David Russell.
Lap 19 saw Herdegen and Goodrich racing hard as they get together with Herdegen spinning. Both had to rejoin the field in the rear as Scott Smith, who started dead last, took the point on the restart followed by Russell, Tracey, Bob Trombley, and Geno Smith. Scott Smith took his sixth win of the season over David Russell, Mark Tracey, Bob Trombley, and Butch Hergegen.
Only seven Sportsman were in the field for their 25 lap feature with Matt Montineri on the pole. But it was Paul Colgan who took the point followed by Mike Pletka, Donny Williams, Timmy Todd, and Montineri. Glenn Carceau passes Montineri for fifth as Montineri slides to sixth followed by Eddie Furtak in seventh.
Pletka passes Colgan and takes over the point as Williams follows behind Pletka for second and Colgan settles into third. Furtak passes Montineri for sixth as Montineri settles into seventh. Williams tries but cannot run down Pletka as Pletka takes his first win of the 2009 season over Donny Williams, Timmy Todd, Jr., Paul Colgan, and Glenn Garceau.
William Hindman took the checkered in the Strictly Stock race over Corey Trombley, Jerry Spears, Dean Sarver, and Teresa Trombley.
