FASCAR Late Model Champion to be Crowned Friday Night at Orlando SpeedWorld | by Jane Smith
Orlando, Fl (November 4, 2008) The FASCAR Late Model Challenge will run their final race of 2008 this Friday at Orlando SpeedWorld. With eight races under their belt, it has been an up and down year for the drivers.
Daniel Keene, Jr. has won six of the eight races and looks to be the 2008 FASCAR Late Model Champion. Keene leads the points with 916 over second place Jeremy Colangelo with 815. A.J. Curreli and Rich Clouser have been the only other two drivers who have visited Victory Lane this year besides Keene.
Twenty two drivers ran the first race of the year at New Smyrna Speedway where A.J. Curreli took the win at his home track. But not far behind Curreli was Keene. The Challenge moved on to Orlando SpeedWorld next in May where twenty cars came to test their luck at the "bullring". Keene took that win followed by Darren Brown.
Twenty four cars ran at USA International in June where Keene took the win followed by Colangelo. Little did the drivers know at that time that that would be the last time the Challenge would ever run USA International as it was sold in August and never to be a racetrack again.
Only eight cars made the trip to Columbia Motorsports Park in the latter part of May. Keene took the win at Columbia followed by once again Jeremy Colangelo.
On July 19, the Challenge went back to New Smyrna Speedway with twenty cars. Of course July is one of the hottest months of the year but it did not stop Rich Clouser from taking the win that day. Rich, a previous champion in the Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series, was extremely happy and hot. Jeremy Colangelo took second that night.
On August 10, the Challenge moved to Desoto Super Speedway where they had a joint race with the Turner Tree Late Models of Desoto. With eighteen cars in the field, Keene took the win followed by Joe Winchell.
September 13th saw the Challenge back at New Smyrna Speedway with twenty one cars in the field. Daniel Keene, Jr. took the win followed by Rich Clouser and Jeremy Colangelo. On October 25th the Challenge returned once again to New Smyrna with only thirteen cars in the field but the same top three were in the finish as the September 13th race, Keene, Clouser and Colangelo.
The Challenge heads back to Orlando where their Champion will be crowned and they will see the end of the 2008 season.
"This has been a really crazy season," said Race Director Scott Jackman. "Gas has been up and down like a yo-yo and made it very hard on our drivers and teams this year. We understood that but would like to thank all the teams and drivers for their support in 2008."
"Hopefully things will get much better for everyone in 2009 and we look forward to a new year."
Along with the FASCAR Late Model Challenge 100 this Friday night at Orlando, also on the program will be the PBG Legends Tour race, Bandoleros, Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stock, Mini Cups, and Strictly Stocks.
