Josh Peacock in the #21 battles underneath Johnny Collins at East Bay
Gibsonton, Fl. - Race number thirteen for the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series was the second trip to the Historic “Clay by the Bay” Eastbay Raceway Park. There was a carnival like atmosphere at the track. The evening’s events not only included top-notch dirt racing but also “Motorcycle Mania”, an event that draws hundreds of bike riders from all over Florida. There was a bike show and the winners were paraded in front of the grandstands prior to the nights racing action.
Thirty-five of the south’s finest dirt late model drivers rolled out for qualifying for the United Land Clearing $3,000 to win fifty lap race. Darrell Padgett looked like he was going to pick up his second Zeigler Racing Engines fast time award but it was” The Catfish” Keith Nosbisch who blistered the field with a 15.515 second run.
Five heat races; two B-Mains and three provisionals would make up the twenty four-car line up. Heat race number one went to “Showtime” Shan Smith, second was “The Locomotive” Johnny Collins and the third transfer spot was David Pollen Jr.
Local favorite Roger Crouse was the winner in heat number two; “The Magic Man” Mark Whitener was second across the stripe with Doug Horton in the Chris Nosbisch ride in the third spot.
Zeigler Racing Engines fast qualifier Keith Nosbisch roared across the stripe to take the win in heat number three. Rich Pratt (who had won the Scott Thompson Memorial NLMS race at Eastbay) ran second and third into the show was David Schmauss.
Jackie Nosbisch coming off a fourth place run at Golden Isles would win the fourth heat of the evening holding off Jeff Matthews and Patrick Williams respectively to move on to the A-Main.
Darrell Padgett won the Southern Style Motorsports B-Main; John Kellum finished second and third was Evan Becton. The Tommy’s Towing B-Main winner was Tommy Evanosky Jr., “Big” Bill Howard finished in second and the last car to race into the field was Shane Williams.
The field lined the front stretch from turn one all the way back to turn four. The pack grandstands cheered for their favorite drivers as they were introduced. The top five drew pills for inversions putting Jackie Nosbisch and Pace American Rookie points’ leader Josh Peacock on the front row. All the heat winners were given the option of starting from the rear of the field and if they were to win would double the $3,000 winners share and take home $6,000. None of them took the challenge and strapped in for the fifty laps to follow.
As the field formed into the “Four Wide Salute to the Fans” the crowd roared with their approval. Then they formed side by side getting ready for the race. It took several tries to get the green flag but when they did the racing action was all over the speedway.
Nosbisch jumped out to the lead and pulled away from the field. Several laps in Johnny Collins moved up through the field along with Mark Whitener and Doug Horton along with several other drivers they swapped the third spot and made several runs at second place Peacock.
At one time Whitener had a good start moved passed Peacock but a quick yellow sent him back to his spot. Whitener would encounter handling problems last in the race but still took home a fifth.
Nosbisch looked like he was going to walk away with his first UDLMCS win in ’08 but a long green flag run brought lapped traffic into play. As Nosbisch closed in the cars were running side by side for position making it tough to get by and allowing Peacock and Collins to close in.
Peacock and Nosbisch ran side-by-side making contact in turn four. Peacock backed off and regrouped and when the white flag came out made the move and was able to get by to a very emotional win. “It’s been a long time but we finally won a BIG one”, said the rookie contender.
“The lap traffic really was tough and I just came out on the wrong end of it,” said a disappointed second place Nosbisch. “That was a great race,” said Collins, “Heck lets load up and go fifty more”! Doug Horton would finish fourth.
In what most said was the most exciting race of the inaugural season of UDLMCS, the track and the series both hit a home run on the event.
Next up is the 1st Annual Kim Allen Memorial race at Hendry County Speedway.
