CHELSEA SCHILLIG BEATS THE HEAT FOR GREAT ISCARS DASH SERIES FINISH
By Dave Westerman
Apopka FL's Chelsea Schillig was back in action for her second race in the International Sport Compact Auto Racing Series (formerly Goody's Dash Series),the Charles Ray III Diabetes Foundation 150 at Dillon, SC Motor Speedway last Saturday night and despite some early problems, ended up having a very good night.
The heat was a huge factor at Dillon Saturday, so much so that Chelsea actually fainted from heat exaustion while helping prepare her Roy Walker Racing/Yadkin Valley Generators Toyota Celica for the first practice session.
Despite this, the 17 year old speedster refused to miss the opening practice session but only ran about ten laps before an electrical fire forced her pit side. Repairs were made but only five laps could be completed in the second practice before the Toyota developed an oil leak at the oil line which was traced back to the earlier electrical short. Because of this, Schillig was unable to "scrub in" her qualifying tires.
Still feeling the effects of the heat, Chelsea had a couple of hours to cool off before qualifying and felt just fine as the cars were rolled onto pit road. The car still wasn't just right, but she managed seventh quick time.
The race didn't start off too well either as Schillig spun early on and had to restart from the rear of the field, but she quickly made her way back up and when a pair of cars tangled in front of her, even though she had to spin to avoid them, she restarted the race in fourth eventually working her way around Jake Hobgood for a third place finish.
Dash Series veteran Danny Bagwell dominated the race followed by Joey Miller and Schillig. Jake Hobgood, Gary Young, Brad Queen, Ned Combs and Justin Hobgood trailed the leaders to the checkered flag.
Schillig is now fifth in the ISCARS Dash series point chase and leads the rookie point battle by just one marker over Brad Queen.
Schillig will return to Dillon Motor Speedway this coming Saturday for her initial outing in the ASA Southern Modified Series (again driving for Walker Racing) then will race her ISCARS Toyota in the Virginia Mountain 150 at Franklin County Speedway in VA on July 26th.
She hopes to race her Legends Car at Orlando Speedworld again during the month of August.
