Second Leg of Triple Crown set for August 2nd at USA International | by Jane Smith
Lakeland, FL (July 23, 2008) The second leg of the Triple Crown is right around the corner at USA International. The “best of the best” Super Late Models throughout Florida and nearby states will come and try their luck for 125 laps of action packed Super Late Model racing.
The first leg of the Triple Crown saw Tim Russell of Longwood set fast time for the 29 car field on a very hot June afternoon. Following Russell was Jeremy Colangelo, Travis Cope, David Wilson and Fain Skinner. Russell pulled the 7 pill for the inversion putting Veteran racer Daryl Shelnut on the pole.
It seemed that being in the front was not a good place to be as leaders fell out just as it looked like their day. Travis Cope, Daryl Shelnut and Dewayne Dempsey saw their dreams fade right before their eyes as each took their turn at bad luck. But in the end, on lap 125, it was Brian Finney of Merritt Island who took the checkered and became winner of the 1st Leg of the Triple Crown.
Official results for that day were:
1.#80 Brian Finney, Merritt Island 2. #84 Matt Bowers, Mt. Dora 3. #77 Patrick Williams, Archer 4. #49 Stanley Smith, Chelesa, AL 5. #07x Jeff Scofield, Plant City 6. #12 Corey Freed, Orlando 7. #05 Jeremy Colangelo, Deland 8. #53 Brad Bischoff, Myakka 9. #88X David Pollen, Jr., Tampa 10. #3 Daniel Webster, Brooksville 11. #22 Dusty Cornelius, Cocoa 12. #39 Dwayne Dempsey, St. Pete 13. #26 Travis Cope, Hernando 14. #7 Daryl Shelnut, Lake City 15. #74 Seth Greco, Thonotosassa 16. #86 Chet Morrison, Homa, LA 17. #88 Justin Larson, Safety Harbor 18. #07 Dustin Henderson, St. Cloud 19. #55 Billy Mowery, Clearwater 20. #92 Wayne Anderson, Wildwood 21. #2 Patrick Conrad, Clermont 22. #5 Joe Boyd, Riverview 23. #00 Robert Yoho, Pinellas Park 24. #83 David Wilson, Sarasota 25. #1 Fain Skinner, Live Oak 26. #36 Tim Russell, Longwood 27. #10 Brad May, Oviedo 28. #11 David Rogers, Orlando 29. #56 Chris Staggs, Clermont
On August 2, in less than 10 days, the second leg will run. Brian Finney leads the points for the Triple Crown chase and hopes to maintain that lead next Saturday. Finney also ran the Clyde Hart Memorial on July 3rd at New Smyrna Speedway but luck was not on his side as he was the first car out of the 125 lap event. Hopefully August 2 will be much better for the Triple Crown points leader.
Also on the program for August 2 will be the Advance Auto Parts Pro Trucks who will go for 50 laps of racing action. Leading the points for the Pro Truck Series is George Gorham, Jr. followed by Scott Bishop, Logan Bordeau, Barry Bartlett, and Kevin Henry.
Coming off his recent win at New Smyrna Speedway during the Clyde Hart Memorial 75 lap truck race is Scott Bishop. Bishop, who ran a few years back regularly with the trucks, has returned in 2008 older and even better. Bishop lives in South Carolina and makes the trips to Florida just to race his No. 22 truck.
