Mark Gimmler Cruises To Checkered Flag Sprint Car Win
Curtis Whalin
The Checked Flag Sprint Series (CFSS) was back at Charlotte County Motor Sports Park on Saturday April 19. Eight cars made the trip to Punta Gorda for the third race for the CFSS season.
The 22 car driven by Scott Adema was plagued by an oil leak all day, which resulted in the car spinning halfway through the heat race, putting them to the rear for the start of the feature race.
Mark Gimmler in the 51 car had the pole as the green flag dropped on the feature race and was able to hold the lead going into the first turn. Despite pressure from the 19 car of Keith Butler and later the 79 car of David Slawiak, Mark was able to keep the lead and win the race.
David Slawiak finished in second place, denying him the Barfield Clean Sweep Award that drivers earn if they win both their heat and the feature race. Keith Butler was a close third. The 22 driven by Scott Adema made a comeback in the feature race to win the Real Racin' USA hard charger award.
Keith Butler and the sponsors of his car, the 19 car that has been named “The Patriot”, have started an initiative called “Race for Freedom” to collect supplies and donations for the troops overseas.
Fans coming to the track can donate money or bring supplies (razors, deodorant, shampoo, baby wipes, etc) and drop them off at the track entrance. Cash donations will be used to buy additional supplies and pay for the mailing costs.
Tonight was the first night at the track and over $400 was collected as well as lots of needed supplies. The donation boxes will be available at the next CFSS race on May 17 for anyone that wants to contribute. If you can’t make it to a race but still want to contribute or would like more information, you can contact Keith at kjmotorsports@aol.com.
