Charlotte County Speedway Sold To Bobby Diehl | By Jack Smith
LeRoy Davidson, after months of negotiations, has sold the Punta Gorda based Charlotte County Speedway to Fastruck promoter Bobby Diehl.
We asked LeRoy Davidson what Saturdays will be like now. "I bought a place out on Pine Island, and I look forward to maybe using it. I am going to try and stay involved, I talked to Howie Commander for over two hours and he tried to convince me otherwise", Davidson said.
But Davidson will surely remain involved in race promotions, he has talked about helping to promote races and get tracks working together more.
Diehl, a high school teacher in Hillsborough County, has operated a truck series for nearly ten years. Diehl is gambling that he can get a renewed lease from the Charlotte County Airport Authority when the current lease expires at the end of March 2008.
The New Year's Eve of Destruction and New Years Enduro will be under the operation of Bobby Diehl. Davidson said, "I am not to help him by working, I am going to race in the Enduro, and my school buses."
FASCAR General Manager Don Nerone, "I think it is a wonderful deal, I think Bobby should have his own race track, as I've told him many times". While noting that he and Davidson have not always got along, he said, "LeRoy was a pretty good promoter, I've always told everybody he is a good promoter." Nerone added in reference to Bobby Diehl, "He has some big shoes to fill."
"I may go out and start a traveling series, so I can go home with $5000 in my pocket", he joked. "I really wish I had not sold it but this may be the smartest thing I ever did", he concluded.
A "Meet and Greet" meeting on Monday December 18, 2006 at 6:00pm is scheduled at the speedway. The speedway name will be changed to Charlotte County Motor Sports Park, Diehl plans to announce shortly.
