Scot Walters Makes it Back 2 Back Wins in AACS | Corey Choquette wins 20 Truck field feature at Desoto
By Rick Anges
Bradenton, Fl. With no rain in the forecast for the first time in many weeks DeSoto Super Speedway hosted a great crowd of fans for some awesome Saturday night racing action.
AACS The Super Late Model qualifying showed a lot of fast times around the “High Banks” with all the cars in the mid 14 second range with “Super” Mario Gosselin cruising around the speedway with a 14.51 second time to take the top spot. With David Wilson, Jessie Dutilly, Scot Walters and Jeff Sloan making up the top five.
The die was rolled and two rows were inverted for the 125-lap race. Jessie Dutilly and Scot Walters sat on the front row and when the green dropped Walters (who had fast time and won the last race for the Supers) wasted no time and took the top spot while Dutilly slid into second.
It wasn’t long before Gosselin and Wilson were on Dutilly and got past for second and third. There was plenty of action all through the field. “The Rocket Man” Wayne Jefferson, who came into the race third in the points chase, got together with Jeff Sloan and Sloan made a wild pass for posistion. Jefferson was sent to the rear while Sloan held his spot. Jefferson would come back to finish sixth while Sloan fell back later in the race taking home an eighth place finish.
Also having a rough night was point’s leader Chris Fontaine. “The car was just way off all night long” Fontaine said after the race. Fontaine had dropped out of the top ten during the race but had moved up when the yellow came out as the leaders crossed the stripe with the white flag showing. The green and white was shown together and as He rolled into turn one the brake pedal went to the floor sending him backwards into the turn one wall. “That was one of the hardest hits I have ever taken,” he said. Fontaine finished seventh.
The late race yellow was for the spinning cars in turn one and two that included Gosselin who was going for the last lap run for the lead when a lapped car entered into the picture. Several cars including second place Gosselin went around.
The green and white flags were shown together and Gosselin who had suffered front end damage in the wreck made one last charge but was unable to get as Walters took his second win in a row in a car formerly piloted by Gosselin. “Super Mario” took the second spot. David Wilson had another superb run finishing third. Jessie Dutilly had a solid fourth place run, Jeff Choquette who had struggled all night was able to salvage a fifth place run. DeSoto Pro Trucks When of the best fields of “Pro Trucks” the state has seen in awhile was on had as twenty rolled out for the twenty-five lap feature.
Danny Anderson took one of the wildest rides when he almost went his roof as he got together with Clint Snyder. Both racers were able to continue.
Corey Choquette moved around all the action and took the lead and never looked back as he took his first win in only his third time behind the wheel of his truck. George Gorham Jr. survived the fray finishing second, third went to points leader Jeff Firestine, fourth was David Hartin and Michela Cenzi rounded out the top five.
