FASCAR Series go for Double Header September 15 and 16 | by Jane Smith
Fans of Super Late Model racing and Late Model racing are in for a real treat this weekend when the FASCAR Sunbelt Super Late Models and the Goodyear Challenge Late Models do a double header. Friday night fans will see the Orlando Dodge Chrysler, Jeep Sunbelt Super Late Model 125. Then on Saturday, New Smyrna Speedway hosts the Goodyear Challenge Late Model 100.
Wayne Anderson (outside) battles with Jeff Scofield at Columbia Motorsports Park
Earlier this year at Orlando it was Jeff Scofield who topped the City Beverage/Budweiser Sunbelt 125. Twenty five of the best Super Late Model drivers were on hand for this event. Jeff Scofield lead the way over Jason Boyd, Wayne Anderson, Chris Fontaine and Jared Allison. Going into this race Friday night, Wayne Anderson of Wildwood leads the points for the Sunbelt series. But not far behind Anderson is Jeff Scofield. Anderson only holds a 15 point lead and as we all know, Orlando can be brutal. Jeff Choquette, who ran his first asphalt race at Orlando SpeedWorld a few years back, stands third and only 16 points behind Scofield. Talk about some close points racing, this is it.
Jason Boyd and Mike Bresnahan are tied for fourth with 515 points each. Who will break the tie-breaker, Boyd or Bresnahan?? Boyd knows Orlando well but Bresnahan is use to a small track coming out of Citrus County Speedway. These two will be well worth watching. Completing the top ten in Sunbelt points are Rich Pratt, Tim Russell, Brian Finney, Scott Millar and our Canadian Jerry Artuso.
"We are very excited about this Friday night," said General Manager Rusty Marcus. "Not only will we have the Orlando Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep Sunbelt race but also our Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stock, Mini Stock, Jr. Stock, Strictly Stocks and an added treat the RE/MAX Legends and Bandoleros. It will definitely be one exciting night."
There will be an open practice on Thursday night, September 14, from 5 to 10 pm for the Sunbelt drivers and any other driver who would like to give Orlando a whirl. Price is $10.00 per person.
On Friday, the pit gate will open at 2 pm with practice for the Sunbelt drivers ALONE from 3 to 4 pm with division practice to follow with the Sunbelt mixed in. Qualifying for the Orlando Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep Sunbelt 125 will be at 6:45 pm with racing action to begin at 8:00 pm. All division will race FEATURES ONLY. General admission is $20.00, students and seniors $10.00, children 11 and under FREE. Grandstands open at 6 pm.
With only one race left after Saturday night's Goodyear Challenge Late Model 100, you can be sure that this race will be exciting and hard fought. Points are dwindling down and for some, it is now or never to make the top ten.
Brad May and A.J. Curreli already have one win each under their belt's at New Smyrna but you can't count out Rich Clouser who is the points leader at this time or Travis Cope who has seen Victory Lane a number of times this year. Each driver is good and love to race New Smyrna.
Rich Clouser has regained the points lead but Dustin Deschamps, one of our rookies, is not far behind Clouser giving him only a seven point lead. Joe Winchell, who had bad luck at Lakeland, held the points lead before Lakeland but is ready to take back his thrown. Winchell, who has a seventh and ninth place finish at New Smyrna, is ready for the challenge.
Fourth in points is another rookie, Travis Cope. Cope has come on strong this year and has proved that he is dad's son when it comes to wheeling a stockcar. In fifth is A.J. Curreli who is no stranger to New Smyrna and has already proven he can top the field and that is exactly what he plans to do again. Completing the top ten in points are Troy Hall, Justin Larson, Greg Kaouk, Chuck Burkhalter, and Sam Watts.
"This has been a great year for the Goodyear Challenge and I am happy to have had the pleasure of knowing all these drivers," said Scott Jackman, Race Director of the Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series. "We have lost a few along the way but we have gained so much and I look forward with pleasure to 2007. We will only get better and better."
Along with the Goodyear Challenge Late Model 100 will be the Pro Trucks, Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stock, Mini Stock, Strictly Stock (in features only) and a car show by the Buick Grand Nationals and T-Type Club of Central Florida.
