Dwyane Dempsey, second from right, picked up a big check from Ocala Speedway and Pepsi
He has often been described as a man with “ice water in his veins” and tonight he would prove that statement true. The low temperatures were nearly unbearable for everyone except for Dwayne Dempsey and the Dempsey Motorsports crew. A field of nearly 40 modified teams from across the country gathered at Ocala Speedway for the Pepsi Blue-Grey 200. Dempsey, already a three-time winner of the event was looking forward to defending his trophy and he showed it during qualifying where he placed his A-Tex Transmission machine on the pole for the 200 lap event.
Once the green flag dropped, it was all Dempsey. The race was divided into two 100-lap segments, the first of which were slowed by several cautions. Dempsey showed his usual calm under pressure as driver after driver tried to wrestle the lead away from the #6 A-Tex Transmission modified driver with no success.
The second half went quicker with fewer cautions until the final 6 laps when anxious drivers made moves that brought out additional caution flags, but in the end, Dempsey captured the win, leading every lap of the race. “The final laps seemed like it took forever,” said Dempsey. “The team did a great job on the car tonight. It was so strong. It makes it easy when the car is working that well.”
The win would be the 2nd Pepsi Blue-Grey victory at Ocala Speedway, and the 4th overall win for the event.
Dempsey, who has won over 150 feature events and 4 series championships was awarded the trophy by the new owner of the Ocala Speedway Michael Peters and the $5000 check was presented by Pepsi corporate personnel. “I want to thank Pepsi and the Ocala Speedway for putting this event on,” said Dempsey. “It has been my honor to participate and win as many times as I have. I will definitely be back next year.”
