Powell Walks Away with Hobby Stock 100 and Ten Grand |

(July 24, 2004) Excitement filled the Volusia Speedway Park as The 6th Annual Hobby Stock 100 weekend was finally here. Competition would be fierce for a chance to win $10,000 1st place purse.
Wally Fowler of Campobello, South Carolina took fast time with 21.862 along with the inside pole position. James Powell of Astor, Florida was next with 22.149 giving his outside pole position. Four heats were run as the drivers battled in a no holds bar style trying to make the ran. The top 4 drivers out of each race made the field for the 100 as the remainers got a last chance effort on Sunday in the 2 consolation races.
The field of 28 took the green full steam, 3 & 4 wide with Fowler taking the top spot followed closely by Powell, Shane Williams, Steve Greene, Tim Hughes, David Kinsey & remaining hard charging field.
It looked like a freight train of fast running, battling colors as the field put the hammer down. Powell overpowered Fowler on lap 11 bring along Williams, Hughes, Jason Floyd.
The field battled 2 & 3 wide the entire 100 laps, several cautions, tire problems, blown motors produced hard luck for some fan favorites, The Night Stalker - Billy Bishop, Kevin Durden, David Kinsey, Patrick Williams, David Showers, Shaun Daugharty, Billy Rodriguez. Shane Williams pulled along side his teammate Powell the last 3 laps bring fans to their feet as they battled side by side for the top position.
Powell nor Williams gave an inch as 1st position is want they were both racing for. Powell kept his smooth, fast line powering out for the win & the $10,000 grand prize as fans cheered. Joe Baker won the Late Model Feature on Saturday. The field took the green wide open, causing several cautions as they fought for positions. Baker overtook Tracy Butler for the lead with only 5 laps to go holding on for the win.
David Showers, Jr won the Street Stock feature over a very hard battling field during Saturday events. Showers overpowered Todd Ponce in a quick move diving down low then high for the lead on lap 6. Showers put the petal to the metal holding off the advances of Ponce, Joey Haslauer, Pat Varieka, Paul Shead, Steve Shead, Richard Schneider, Trevor Gamble & the remaining field. Ponce & Haslauer connected causing a 3 lap dash but Showers was not to be denied as he held for the checkered & the win.
Local favorite, 14 year old, Chris Day took the old timers to school as he won both Saturday's & Sunday's Mini Stock Features.
Day drove a fast, steady line, using the track as he stalked leaders like Keith Briggs, Mark Eldridge & others for his chance to take the top spot. Once he over took the leads both nights, he held on tight for the wins, much to the delight of the fans. Great Job, Chris.
Tommy Saunders took Saturday & Sunday's Pure Stock Features over 2 fields of extremely competitive drivers. The field battled 3 & 4 wide, sparing no paint or parts for their chance at the win. Both nights proved to be glove off racing for the win & points. Saunders used his head, raced a fast, clean race taking all chances to advance & maintain the top spot for the win.
Lee Scrape won The 360 Sprint Feature over a field of very aggressive drivers. Scrape put the hammer down over taking the lead on lap16 from Mike Love. Several cautions produced the lost of drivers like Gene Lasker, Danny Pickett & Tim Miller to fall out. Robbie Hagar, Larry Pickett, Bubba The Love Sponge Clem, George Pedrick, Al Klusinack, Teresa Miller, Jeff Parks, Otto Scrape & remaining field to continually swap positions as they battled for a win. Scrape overpowered Love during lap traffic and flew weaving in & out of traffic until the checkered was thrown for the win. Have an opinion on this story?
