Goodyear Challenge Late Models take on SpeedWorld July 9th | by Jane Smith Samsula, Florida (July 6, 2004) The Goodyear Challenge Late Model series will have it's sixth race out of a twelve race schedule this Friday, July 9th, at Orlando SpeedWorld.
On their first visit to SpeedWorld back in March, it was Jason Boyd setting fast time but in tech was disqualified for being light and started at the rear of the field. Boyd did a great job of coming from the rear to take the win followed by Joe Winchell, Michael Williams, Rich Clouser, and Tate Pierce.

Going into race sixth Jason Boyd holds only a 25 point lead over Rich Clouser. But the points could change after this race with the worst finish for all racers who have raced six races being dropped. This could or could not hurt either Boyd or Clouser. Boyd stands at 434 points to Clouser's 409 points. Joe Winchell is not giving Clouser much room either since Winchell is only three points behind Clouser. Winchell at one time led the points and is hoping to get back that lead again. Winchell stands at 406 points. Jerry Artuso, our Canadian driver and last year's Goodyear Challenge Champion, comes in fourth in points with 367 but right on Artuso's tail feathers is Chuck Burkhalter with 365 points. How they finish Friday night will tell the tale. Tate Pierce sits sixth in points with 321 followed by Martin Pierce with 278. This will be Martin Pierce's first race since he suffered mechanical problems at SpeedWorld in March and was unable to compete. Charles Kopache is eighth in points with 271 points followed by Steve Smith in ninth with 236 and Dawayne Bryan in tenth with 220. Thirty three Late Model drivers were at SpeedWorld in March and a good number are expected for the race Friday night. Watch for Wade Lynn, Bill Ostriker, Dan Crowe, Rusty Baker, Greg Kaouk, A.J. Curreli, Bobby Newton, Kenny Hankins just to name a few. Pit gates will open at 2 p.m. with practice for the Goodyear Challenge Late Models from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Qualifying for the Goodyear Challenge Late Model feature will be at 6:30 p.m. Racing will begin at 7:30. Also on the program Friday night will be the Open Wheel Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stock, Mini Stock and Strictly Stock. Grandstands will open at 6 p.m. General admission will be $15.00, $10.00 for students and Senior Citizens, and children 11 and under are always FREE. See ya at the races!!!!
