Sunday, September 7, 2003 | | Durden Wins Bronson Mods, Conquest Wins Two Divisions!!!!! | By Rick Warren
Once again Bronson Motor Speedway managed to dodge the weather bullet, and despite a slight delay for a brief shower during a practice session, a full night of racing was completed.
It was High School Football Booster night at BMS, and quite a few members of local Booster Clubs, as well as High School Athletes were in attendance. They, as well as the fans were treated to an exciting program of racing. After a full card of heat races, a football passing contest was held during intermission.
The Modifieds were first up after intermission. When the Green Flag waved, Kevin Durden powered the Alan Southard entry into the #1 spot. Durden went wire to wire for the win, but the race was anything but dull. The battle for second position was fast and furious from green to checkers. Randy Herrick, Buddy Hughes, Rick Maguire, Larry Goolsby, Gene Owen and Monty Morgan were all taking turns passing each other, trying to claim the runner up spot. When the final lap was complete, Durden brought home the win, followed by Morgan, Owen and Goolsby.
The Sportsman Division was next on the track, and what a race it was. Arthur Conquest was making his first start with a new car in this division, and the car was very fast. Along with Conquest, Rob Cooper, Doug Anderson, Doc Batson and Kimbo VanAernam all took shots at leading the race. Anderson took the early lead, with lots of pressure from Batson and Conquest. Cooper had his hands full trying to find a way into the front pack. Anderson slid high in turn three, and a string of racers went by him before he could get back in the racing groove. Cooper got by Conquest, and set off in pursuit of Batson. Cooper caught Batson, and as they drove into turn 1 side by side on lap 14, the cars made contact with one another, and both cars spun wildly into turn 2, narrowly missing the wall. The race restarted with Conquest in front, and Batson and Cooper restarting from the rear. Cooper and Batson made a hard charging run thru traffic, and when caution was displayed with 4 laps to go, Cooper and Batson had worked back toward the front, and would restart behind Conquest. Cooper and Batson tried every groove on the track to get around Conquest, but Arthur’s new ride had enough ponys under the hood to hold on for the win.
In the Pure Stock division, a large field of racers took the green flag, and John Mamph jumped out to the early lead, with Cliff Erhardt close behind. It looked like Mamph would have his way as the race neared completion, but a late caution allowed the field to close in on the leader. At the restart, with only a few laps remaining, Conquest worked his racer under Mamph off turn 2, to take the lead. The race finished with Conquest out front, giving him back to back feature wins, on the same night, in different divisions.
Kevin Hodge kept his point lead safe in the V8 Bomber division , with another feature win. Hodge passed Charlie Kennedy to take the lead , with Kennedy holding on to second.
Jeff Stalnaker took top honors in the mini stock division, and Harold Barup picked up his second win of the season in the 4 Cyl Bombers.
