Wayne Anderson and Dick Anderson grabbed the top two spots Friday night at Orlando
BITHLO, FLORIDA - Wayne Anderson won the FASCAR Sunbelt Super Late Model Series 125 Friday night (Aug. 1) at Orlando Speedworld notching his first Sunbelt win this season on what proved to be a one lane freight train type race on a slick track.
"This was a good run for us after a one lap practice and it just felt great," said a sweltering Anderson, downing a Gatorade. "I've been experimenting with a new car, but haven't gotten it quite ready."
Anderson, driving the Air Frame International car held off several quick charges by father Dick Anderson in his Country Joe Racing ride, who finished second. Michael Williams, the 2002 FASCAR Sunbelt Series champion finished third in the South 40 Motorsports car.
A race worn Dick Anderson sat for a few minutes to catch his breath in post race tech and was pleased with his racing performance.
"I had a good car at the end and all I had to do was change my rhythm," said Dick Anderson. "I backed off Wayne a little, but I'm satisfied."
"Tonight the car was just better than him," said a chuckling Anderson, about his car outperforming his own driving effort. "Put this chassis and car together myself and now it's coming into its own."
Williams is enjoying his move back up to the top five in points, but even after this strong run his car has been sold,
"The car was a little tight in the center, but I'm happy with this third place finish," said Williams. "Kay ran me real well behind me and I sure appreciated that."
The top five cars of a 22 FASCAR Super Late Model starting field remained the same for 121 circuits with Wayne Anderson leading Dick Anderson, James Powell III, Williams and Johnny Kay. Third place runner Powell would drop from the field with a lost valve in lap 122 changing the running order.
Jonny Kay posted fast time during two lap qualifying in his second circuit turning the three-eighths mile high banked oval in 13.612 seconds or 132.24 mph in his A Best Fork Lift car. Kay drew number five for inversion.
Wayne Anderson outwitted pole sitter Chris Fontaine hanging him out to dry during the opening circuit and led a early cautious running field until caution one fell in lap five for a spinning car. This would be the first of 14 total cautions for 51 laps.
Kay worked Williams hard for fourth in lap 66, but was unable to make a pass and tucked back into fifth as the top five drivers tried to change the running order when possible.
During lap 98 it was Powell trying Dick Anderson for second trying a quick look outside, but again the top five was not in a reshuffling mode on what was a tricky track. Powell tried Dick Anderson in lap 109, but backed off.
Wayne Anderson and Dick Anderson began to set a faster pace with Powell now making an effort to keep up with the top two and Williams about five cars behind Powell.
Powell's car faltered in lap 122 and he dropped from the field changing the top five running order.
Wayne Anderson crossed the stripe followed by Dick Anderson and Williams. Rounding the top five were Kay and Brian Finney.
The next FASCAR Sunbelt 125 will be Oct. 17 and Oct. 18 at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, FL.
