Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series invades Orlando SpeedWorld Friday Night | by Jane Smith
Bithlo, Fla (July 14, 2003) The Goodyear Challenge Late Models will make their only appearance in the 2003 season at SpeedWorld this Friday night. A good number of Late Models are expected for this 100 lap feature event.
Brad May comes into the Friday night event leading the points in the Goodyear Challenge with 349 points but only 7 points behind May is the previous point leader Jerry Artuso of Canada. Artuso has lead the points for the 2003 season but lost the lead after the Lakeland event.
Rich Clouser sits third in points in his Bobby Sears No. 9 Late Model. Clouser sits at 295 points followed by Steve Smith with 272 points and Joe Sumasky with 265.
Tim Russell, who is sixth in points, holds a one point lead over Jason Boyd in seventh. Jimmy Castleberry, Larry Osteen and Sean Murphy complete the top ten. The 2002 Goodyear Late Model Champion Jerry Symons sits way back in points due to missing a few races with a broken arm.
Also expected for the Friday night race are Tony Amico, Steve Dorer, A.J. Currelli, Chris Lawrence, Dan Crowe, Brent O'Neill and many more.
Qualifying for the Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series will be at 7:00 p.m. depending on the car count. Racing action will begin at 8 p.m.
Also on the program for Friday night will be the Legends plus Open Wheel Modifieds, Sportsman, Super Stock, Mini Stock and Strictly Stock. The Super Late Models will have the night off.
Derrick Wood still holds the lead for the Bandolero Bandits with 536 points followed by Gerald White, Jr. with 466. Thirty points behind White is Chad Akins with 436 points. Josh Williams moved into fourth with 348 points followed by Matthew Jarrett with 344 points.
Kevin Henry is the one to beat when it comes to Bandolero Young Guns. Henry leads the Young Guns with 540 points followed by Brandon Thompson with 500 points. Scott Jarrett, Troy Atkins and Jessica Murphy round out the top five. The Bandoleros are gearing up for a National event at SpeedWorld that will take place on July 26. Over 100 entries have been received from Texas to California for this event.
Even though they will not race Friday night, Rusty Ebersole and B.J. McLeod are tied once again for the Super Late Model points lead. B.J. won his 50th Super Late Model race last Friday at SpeedWorld and with that win tied the points once again. Both McLeod and Ebersole have 420 points.
Ricky Wood sits third followed by David Hart and Ronnie Roach. The Super Late Models will return to racing action at SpeedWorld on July 18.
Richard Hight has built up a fairly good lead in the Sportsman division with 495 points, 127 points more than second place Michael Albert. Doug Samion, even though he has not been racing as of late, sits third with 256 points followed by Danny Shearer in fourth with 216 points and Rob Kayse in fifth with 180 points.
Shane Held holds a 24 point lead over Matt Wheeler in the Open Wheel Modifieds. This is one of the closer points battle in the regular FASCAR divisions. Jason Boyd sits third with 284 points followed by Lynn Dicandio with 216 points and Glen Bradley with 200 points.
Tim "Missileman" McPhail looks to be headed for his second Mini Stock Championship at SpeedWorld as he leads with 424 points. Dick Laszlo comes in second with 304 points followed by Sean Bass with 296 points. Newcomer Mike Williams sits in fourth with 156 points followed by Randy Blakeslee with 128 points. Expect to see this guys put on a good show until the end for the Championship.
Cory Freed is looking for his second straight Championship in the Super Stock division. Freed leads the points wioth 408 points. Bob Wines comes in second with 336 points followed by Ron Whaley with 284 points. Mike Soukup and Billy Cuddy fill out the top five.
Grandstands will open at 6 p.m. with qualifying for the Goodyear Challenge Late Models at 7 p.m. depending on car count.
