Sixth Annual Midas Jewelers 200 Florida State Late Model Championship rescheduled for June 27th and 28th | by Jane Smith
Lakeland, Fla (June 24, 2003) Due to a total washout of all events last weekend at USA International, the Sixth Annual Midas Jewelers 200 Florida State Late Model Championship was rescheduled for June 27th and 28th.
Last year the Late model event was extended to 200 laps giving the competitors another challenge - pit stops. Coming out on top was Jimmy "Mr Excitement" Cope who proudly wears his Midas Jewelers Championship gold and diamond ring.
"The event went over well last year and USA International and Midas Jewelers committed themselves to this annual event," said USA International President Bill Martino, Jr.
"Like last year and the ring that Jimmy Cope proudly wears, Midas Jewelers will design the championship ring again this year," Martino added. A treasure any driver would wear proudly.
On Friday night, June 27, the FASCAR Pro Modifieds will run a 50 lap event along with the FASTRUCKS. Jerry Symons and D.J. Hoelzle are both ready for this race and both are fighting for the Pro Mod Championship. Alan McCafferty, Bryan Campbell and Skip Honaker round out the top five.
Last year, Tommy King was in a Super Late Model for this event but in 2003 King leads the FASTRUCKS Series in points. King adapted quickly to his new ride and hopes to take his first FASTRUCK USA International win. Jimmy Gill, Tim Shaffner, Wendell Bristol and James Wright III round out the top five in FASTRUCK points.
Saturday the "Big Dogs" move in for 200 laps of Super Late Model action. Wayne Anderson leads the points for the Sunbelt Super Late Model Series but Wayne will find Jimmy Cope defending his title and looking for that second ring.
James Powell, Jonny Kay, Jay Middleton and Fain Skinner round out the top five for the Sunbelt. 2002 Sunbelt Super Late Model Champion Michael Williams makes his first appearance racing after his April 12th racing accident at Lakeland.
After 200 laps of Super Late Model action, comes the Goodyear Challenge Late Model 100 race. Joe Artuso leads the points for the Goodyear followed by Brad May, Steve Smith, Rich Clouser, and Jason Boyd. As always, these guys will supply some great side-by-side racing.
Saturday night there will be an on track autograph session beginning at 6:15 p.m. and the start of the 200 lap Florida State Late Model Championship at 7:30 p.m.
Advance reserve seat tickets are on sale through the speedway office and will be availabe race day at the main ticket booth. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! <news@karnac.org>or send a letter to the editor!
