Dorer Wins Charlotte Late Model 100

By Claude Lewis

PUNTA GORDA, Fla. (May 24) Steve Dorer, a 33-year-old out of Lakeland, took the checkered flag in Saturday nights 100-lapper for Late Models at Charlotte County Speedway.

Dorer, a former Michigan Super Late Model champ who is the defending SARA Limited Late Model king, collected $2,000 for his hard work behind the wheel of the lightning-streak No. 10 car.

Dorer had to change the transmission in his car right before qualifying and wasnt all that fast in time trials. He started ninth in the 19 car field, but slowly but surely worked his way to the front.

We made some adjustments wedge and sway bar before the race, said Dorer, pointing to the work of crew John Lovelady and Tom Monopoly.

Dorer took the lead from Mike Hovis on lap 50. Hobo looked strong in the early going in the No. 29 Budweiser car before it got away from him.

Although Dorer had the quickest car, it wasnt easy with all the cautions and restarts. Making it even tougher was the fact that all 100 laps were green flag laps. No caution laps were counted.

Dorer, whose car is sponsored by Checkered Flag Race Parts and Mike Gagels Auto Recycling, was able to win by a cozy margin over runner-up Wayne Morris of Mulberry.

Randy Fox of Lehigh Acres was third, Joe Sumasky of Lehigh fourth and Glenn Morris of Pine Island fifth. Chris Libak of Fort Myers was sixth, Buzz Martin of Lehigh Acres seventh, Richie Anderson of North Fort Myers eighth, Mark Collins of Cape Coral ninth and Cory Collum of Cape Coral tenth.

The next 100-lapper for Late Models at CCS is June 28.

There were five other divisions racing Saturday night at the 3-8 mile oval.

In Super Stock, Brian Richardson of Fort Myers survived a bump with Danny Caylor and a tire rubbing on a fender to win the 25-lap feature. Richardson had just enough to hold off the No. 10 car of Eric Smith, who ran a strong race.

Kay Jackson of Punta Gorda was originally third in son Anders car, but the 91 car was too light. That allowed George Tanner to officially finish third.

Shane Leonard battled hard to stay ahead of Chris Oncken was win the 25-lap Road Warrior feature. Taking third was Larry Rudd of North Port.

In Thunder Trucks, Don Van Acker of Punta Gorda ran away from the field in his 33 truck. Points leader John Garrett took second, while Ray Tucker of North Fort Myers was third.

The Front Wheel Drive 4-Cylinders were split into two divisions for the first time one for kids and the other for adults.

In the kids race, Cody Benoit of Fort Myers was the winner. In the adult race, Brad Shanaway of Arcadia took checkers.

The big race on the May 31 card at Charlotte County Speedway is a 50-lapper for Open Wheel Modifieds. Sportsman will also return.
