Goodyear Challenge Late Models Journey to Charlotte County Speedway May 10

by John Barker

SAMSULA, Fla. - Jerry Artuso leads FASCAR drivers to Charlotte County Speedway on Saturday night for Goodyear Challenge Late Model Series 100 racing action on the Punta Gorda fast paved oval track.

It could be a tough evening on the high-banked Charlotte County three-eighths mile track for many Goodyear drivers not used to this speedy facility with its tough corners, but it will be a highly competitive race show for fans.

Artuso of Ontario, Canada is the current Goodyear point leader with 186 points after two Challenge series Late Model starts and two top five finishes. Rich Clouser of Palm Bay, FL is second a close 24 points behind. Jason Boyd of Orlando, FL is third with 159 points and won the opening Goodyear Challenge race at New Smyrna Speedway March 22, and Brad May of Orlando, FL is fourth with 145 points after winning race two at USA International Speedway in Lakeland, FL on April 12. Larry Osteen of Clermont, FL is fifth with 143 points.

2002 Points Champion Jerry Symons recently suffered a broken arm and probably will not be able to compete at Charlotte County Speedway

Frank Welch of Ft. Meyers, FL heads up the local Late Model contingent in the #96 and is also the local points leader as a rookie driver. He will be tough. Welch is the former Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series point winner. Steve Arnold also of Cape Coral, FL will be on the charge as well.

Charlotte County Speedway adult admission is $15 for adults, $13 for seniors and children 11 years and under is $8. Pit admittance is $25. Qualifying is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. and racing begins at 7 p.m.
