Adams, driving the Goodson Farms/Coca-Cola/Hodgetel sponsored #4 Shaw sprinter, started the evening by breaking his own track record of 14.54 seconds, set last year by turning a blistering 14.471 on his second qualifying lap around the banked half-mile. The 2000 National Sprint Car Hall of Fame "Driver of the Year" and 2000 USCS National Champion started fourth in the 30-lap main event and inherited the lead from defending USCS Champion, Terry Gray from Bartlett, Tenn., who had a right rear tire going down on lap 4.
Gray's tire exploded and Chase Taylor from Montgomery, Texas, rolled to a stop on the backstretch at almost the same instant on lap 5. This bunched the field back behind Adams and gave Gray a new chance with fresh rubber to come from the rear.
At the drop of the green, Adams pulled away with Wayne Reutimann Sr. from Zephyrhills, Fla., in behind him. Adams pulled steadily away until Reutimann closed on him on lap 20 and appeared to have an opportunity to challenge until Adams made a daring move in lapped traffic to streak away to victory lane with the veteran racer Reutimann garnering his second runner-up finish in two nights of USCS competition.
Jim Raptis from Marietta, Ga., followed in third with 2000 USCS top rookie driver, Randy Weaver from Powder Springs, Ga., turning in another stellar driving performance to finish fourth.
Nine-time national sprint car champion Gray battled his way back from the rear of the field after surviving the earlier flat tire.
Brad Davis once again headed the second 10 in sixth, followed by Chris Rogers of Winston, Ga., in seventh, Wayne Reutimann Jr. of Zephyrhills, Fla., who came into the event as the national points leader, in eighth, Ted Williams from Atlanta, Ga., in ninth and Chris Hill from Wedowee, Ala., rounded out the top 10.
The Airflow Research Power Dash was won by Reutimann Sr. Heat races were won by Williams and Aubrey Black of Lookout Mountain, Ga. The Huggins Cams Hardcharger Award went to Adams for passing the most cars in the event. Gray garnered the night's KSE Racing Products Outstanding Steering Performance Award.
