{"id":4899,"date":"2011-02-14T12:50:54","date_gmt":"2011-02-14T12:50:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/?p=4899"},"modified":"2011-02-14T12:50:58","modified_gmt":"2011-02-14T12:50:58","slug":"earnhardt-to-start-from-the-500-pole-for-first-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/series\/earnhardt-to-start-from-the-500-pole-for-first-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Earnhardt to start from the 500 pole for first time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Sporting News Wire Service<\/p>\n<p>DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. &#8212; The pressure&#8217;s off <a id=\"dearnhar01Link\" name=\"dearnhar01\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/dearnhar01\/cup\/index.html\">Dale Earnhardt Jr<\/a>. &#8212; until next Sunday, that is.<\/p>\n<p>In Sunday&#8217;s qualifying session at Daytona International Speedway, Earnhardt edged Hendrick Motorsports teammate <a id=\"jgordon00Link\" name=\"jgordon00\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/jgordon00\/cup\/index.html\">Jeff Gordon<\/a> for the top starting spot in next Sunday&#8217;s season-opening Daytona 500.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-4900\" href=\"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/series\/earnhardt-to-start-from-the-500-pole-for-first-time\/attachment\/63454906\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-4900\" title=\"63454906\" src=\"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/DaleJr-Daytona-449x312.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"449\" height=\"312\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Turning a lap in 48.364 seconds (186.089 mph),  Earnhardt claimed the 10th Coors Light pole award of his career and his  first at a restrictor-plate superspeedway. He&#8217;ll try to win NASCAR&#8217;s  most prestigious race for the second time in the 400th start of his Cup  career.<\/p>\n<p>What Earnhardt &#8212; and Gordon, for that matter &#8212;  won&#8217;t have to worry about is racing for position in Thursday&#8217;s Gatorade  Duel 150 qualifying races at the 2.5-mile superspeedway. Under the  unique qualify procedure for the Daytona 500, the two fastest drivers in  time trials are locked into the front row.<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the field for the 53rd running of the Great American Race won&#8217;t be set until the Duels are completed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The main thing [the pole] does for me is take  the pressure off Thursday&#8217;s race,&#8221; said Earnhardt, who will start from  the top spot in the first qualifying race. &#8220;I can go out and have fun  and not worry about where I finish or getting a good starting spot for  the Daytona 500.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Gaining a slight edge through Turn 1, Earnhardt narrowly beat Gordon (48.396 seconds, 185.966 mph) for the top spot on the grid.<\/p>\n<p>It was the third Daytona 500 front-row sweep for Hendrick Motorsports, which placed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/kschrade00\/truck\/index.html\">Ken Schrader<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/dwaltrip00\/truck\/index.html\">Darrell Waltrip<\/a> first and second in 1989. <a id=\"mmartin00Link\" name=\"mmartin00\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/mmartin00\/cup\/index.html\">Mark Martin<\/a> won the pole for last year&#8217;s 500, with Earnhardt starting on the outside of the front row.<\/p>\n<p>Rookie <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/tbayne00\/bg\/index.html\">Trevor Bayne<\/a> (185.445) was third fastest in the No. 21 Wood Brothers Ford, followed by Richard Childress Racing teammates <a id=\"pmenard00Link\" name=\"pmenard00\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/pmenard00\/cup\/index.html\">Paul Menard<\/a> (185.422), <a id=\"cbowyer00Link\" name=\"cbowyer00\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/cbowyer00\/cup\/index.html\">Clint Bowyer<\/a> (185.223) and <a id=\"jburton00Link\" name=\"jburton00\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/jburton00\/cup\/index.html\">Jeff Burton<\/a> (185.071).<\/p>\n<p>Bayne was elated by his strong run &#8212; and equally impressed by the drivers starting ahead of him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If I&#8217;m going to get knocked off by somebody,  I&#8217;m sure the fans were glad it was Dale Jr.,&#8221; said Bayne, who briefly  held the second spot before Earnhardt&#8217;s pole-winning run. &#8220;But to be  sitting third behind two of the most well-known drivers in NASCAR &#8212; and  Jeff Gordon my childhood hero &#8212; I mean, this is incredible.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/belliott00\/cup\/index.html\">Bill Elliott<\/a> (17th fastest), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/tkvapil00\/cup\/index.html\">Travis Kvapil<\/a> (20th) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/jnemeche00\/cup\/index.html\">Joe Nemechek<\/a> (21st) all earned guaranteed spots in the 500 as the three fastest drivers among those required to qualify on speed. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nascar.com\/drivers\/dps\/tlabonte00\/cup\/index.html\">Terry Labonte<\/a> also knows he will start the race, thanks to a provisional available to the most recent past champion not otherwise qualified.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Sporting News Wire Service DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. &#8212; The pressure&#8217;s off Dale Earnhardt Jr. &#8212; until next Sunday, that is.
