features all six divisions running on the final points night of the 2010 racing season. While the season points champions are already decided in some divisions, every racer will be gunning to accumulate the maximum points possible in their quest to finish as high in the standings as they can, and in doing so present the best face possible to potential sponsors for the 2011 racing season. And for the fans, arriving in 50’s attire will earn a discount on admission while kids will enjoy the coin toss competition at intermission.

Joe Kump sits atop the points standings with the Daytona Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram Late Models going into this Saturday’s action, and with a 37 point advantage by Kump, Donnie Chappell will have to wish disaster on the Lake Helen driver in order to gain much ground. And while Kump has been leading the points, Chappell has been making himself the odds on favorite for the most improved racer at Volusia Speedway Park, as early season struggles gave way to stronger finishes by mid season, and lately Chappelle has been a force to reckon with. So Saturday’s race will be a chance for Chappelle to concentrate finishing in front of Kump and in doing so set himself up for the best points finish possible, as no one else is within striking distance of the two points leaders.

Jamie Carter is 54 points in front of Jeff Mathews as the Budweiser Modifieds return to action, as Carter failed to finish their last feature race on September 18th. Mathews fought handling problems on that same night and finished in third place, so both will be looking to better their performance in this last shot at the points title. Carter has been consistent and strong all season, outside of the DNF the last time out, but does not have the victories that Mathews has accumulated. However, Mathews missed a week at the track and suffered some setbacks that kept him out of the top spot, so Carter is firmly in control as this weekend’s action hit the clay. Kent Corbin is just over 100 points behind Mathews in the third spot.

The Taylor Racing Products Sportsman Division belongs to Aaron Barsness after a strong third place finish on the 18th gave him a lock on the points championship, so the real battle is for second place between Steve Shead and Matt Mcgillivray, who are separated by a mere 6 points as they fight over the second spot. Stanton Mills has been the man to beat on the track each week, and virtually no one has managed to do it, but at 313 points out of first place Mills will be looking for another win while others race with points mathematics rolling around in their brains. Mills’ dominance will mean that those who need a win will have to contend with the 57 machine while holding off their points competition, and with nothing to lose but the race Mills will be tougher to beat than usual.

Philip Brown is going to win the 2010 points championship for the Daytona Sportswear Street Stocks and Tim Hughes will definitely be second, as not much is going to change at the top of the points standings this week no matter what happens on the track. But with the points race basically decided it frees up the racers to simply race, as no one will be trying to protect their points position instead of going for a win. And in turn, that means that this Saturday’s feature race could be a wide open affair with all or nothing mentalities driving the action, and that means a very exciting race. Hughes notched himself a win at Ocala Speedway just a couple of weeks ago and would love to do the same at Volusia Speedway Park, and it will be up to Brown to keep that from happening.

Scott Mooers has all but owned the season points championship with the Amsoil Synthetic Lubricants Thunder Stocks since week one, but he will not be racing at Volusia Speedway Park on Saturday as a suspension has him sidelined for the rest of the season. So the focus shifts away from Mooers and to Luke Sadler who holds the second spot in the points race and still needs to hold off Chad Scranton who is 29 points back in third place. Scranton has become a regular in Victory Lane late in the season and still has his sights set on Sadler, while Sadler has had to overcome early season problems that kept him from finishing some races and put him further behind Mooers in the points battle. Scranton will be hot for yet another victory and Sadler will be trying to reign him in as they hit the clay on Saturday night.

Defending 4 Cylinder Challenger Champion Tony Laporta will not be repeating as champion in 2010 as Casey Feaster has stepped up and earned the title this time around, but Laporta is not finished racing until Saturday’s events are over and he will be looking to dampen Feaster’s championship celebration by stealing the win. Laporta looks pretty cozy in second place at 77 points behind Feaster, and with 113 points separating him from third place runner R.J. Glaser, so look for Laporta to give Feaster all he has on Saturday night.

Volusia Speedway Park will open the grandstand gates a 5:30PM this Saturday and invites fans to come early and watch as our racers prepare for their final shot at climbing the points ladder in 2010. Fans are also reminded that the United Dirt Late Model Challenge Series will be back for their annual Fall Nationals on October 16th, as VSP’s Late Models, Sportsman, Thunder Stocks, and 4 Cylinder Challengers, will get another shot at racing in non points events that night as well. For more information, please visit www.VolusiaSpeedwayPark.com.

by VSP Media BARBERVILLE, FL- After a week off racing action returns to Volusia Speedway Park this Saturday, October 2nd, as “Fabulous 50’s Night” features all […]

[21

post-3130","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-upcoming-events
["GET
