{"id":2394,"date":"2010-07-30T12:09:03","date_gmt":"2010-07-30T12:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/?p=2394"},"modified":"2010-07-31T07:56:57","modified_gmt":"2010-07-31T07:56:57","slug":"needmore-speedway-to-open-on-saturday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/front-page-news\/needmore-speedway-to-open-on-saturday\/","title":{"rendered":"Needmore Speedway to open on Saturday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!-- \t\t@page { margin: 0.79in } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --> <!-- \t\t@page { margin: 0.79in } \t\tP { margin-bottom: 0.08in } --><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2403\" href=\"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/front-page-news\/needmore-speedway-to-open-on-saturday\/attachment\/needmorespeedway3-2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2403\" title=\"NeedmoreSpeedway3\" src=\"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/NeedmoreSpeedway31-500x68.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"68\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Moultrie Observer<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Edited by John Berti<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>MOULTRIE, GA \u2014July 29, 2010 \u2014 Chris Hunnicutt was not much into racing as a youngster and says he went to \u201cmaybe two or three races when I was growing up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Hunnicutt is into racing a big way now as he prepares for the grand opening of his Needmore Speedway on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2395\" href=\"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/front-page-news\/needmore-speedway-to-open-on-saturday\/attachment\/needmorespeedway1\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-2395\" title=\"NeedmoreSpeedway1\" src=\"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/NeedmoreSpeedway1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>The 3\/8-mile, 90-foot wide banked dirt oval is located at 1060 John Vickers Road in Norman Park just 7 miles West of I-75 off Exit 49.<\/p>\n<p>If the number of cars that competed at the practice races the last two Saturdays is an indication, Hunnicutt should have a good turnout.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had between 60 and 70 car the last two weeks,\u201d Hunnicutt said Thursday morning as he continued to get ready for Saturday\u2019s races. \u201cAnd I think about 80 percent of the ones last week were different.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hoping to have up to 50 late models Saturday. We\u2019ve had calls from Daytona, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, South Alabama, Phenix <a rel=\"attachment wp-att-2396\" href=\"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/front-page-news\/needmore-speedway-to-open-on-saturday\/attachment\/needmorespeedway2\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-2396\" title=\"NeedmoreSpeedway2\" src=\"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/NeedmoreSpeedway2-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"159\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>City \u2026 from about a two- to three-hour radius.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called the interest in the track so far \u201cpretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gates will open at 3 p.m. Saturday with racing set to start at 7 p.m. General admission is $10 and pit passes are available for $25. Children 12 and under are admitted free.<\/p>\n<p>Concessions will be available and no glass bottles are allowed.<\/p>\n<p>Hunnicutt said his original intent was just to build a practice track for his son Austin, 14.<\/p>\n<p>Austin Hunnicutt also plays baseball and football, but especially enjoys driving a race car. And it was a least an hour to get to track where he could run his car.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was hard to find anywhere for him to practice,\u201d Hunnicutt said.<\/p>\n<p>Hunnicutt broke ground last June, but by winter, he found there might be enough interest to support a dirt track in Colquitt County.<\/p>\n<p>By July, the track, stands and concession area were complete and he was ready to open the gates.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been real time-consuming,\u201d Hunnicutt said. \u201cAnd it\u2019s been stressful at times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut we enjoy it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And he\u2019s hoping drivers will enjoy the Southeast\u2019s newest racing venue.<\/p>\n<p>There certainly is some incentive to enter the Late Model race on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The winner will get $3,000.<\/p>\n<p>The runner-up will get $1,200 and the driver of the third-place car will take home $1,200.
