{"id":21415,"date":"2014-04-14T17:24:27","date_gmt":"2014-04-14T17:24:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/?p=21415"},"modified":"2014-04-14T17:24:27","modified_gmt":"2014-04-14T17:24:27","slug":"brandon-morris-takes-sportsman-50-at-new-smyrna-speedway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/front-page-news\/brandon-morris-takes-sportsman-50-at-new-smyrna-speedway\/","title":{"rendered":"BRANDON MORRIS TAKES SPORTSMAN 50 AT NEW SMYRNA SPEEDWAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-21368\" style=\"border: 2px solid black;\" alt=\"NSS Logo Small\" src=\"https:\/\/karnac.com\/flanews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/NSS-Logo-Small.jpg\" width=\"500\" height=\"105\" \/>Saturday\u00a0night racing action at New Smyrna Speedway featured the Sportsman\u00a0cars and drivers racing for 50 laps and a nice $1,000 payday. \u00a0Sixteen cars checked in for time trials and it was Lakeland-area driver\u00a0Brandon Morris setting the quick lap at 19.680 seconds. \u00a0Aaron Williamson of\u00a0Palm Harbor was second fastest with a 19.788 lap while Garrett Hill was third\u00a0with a lap of 19.932. \u00a0Morris drew the eight pill for the line-up inversion\u00a0placing Shelton Bowers and Richard Goodrich on the front row for the start of\u00a0the big race. \u00a0Bowers led the opening circuit before Earl Beckner powered by to take the\u00a0lead. \u00a0Bowers held strong in second until Morris made his move to the\u00a0runner-up spot on lap 11. \u00a0Caution flew for the first time on the 13th lap as\u00a0Williamson looped his car while ducking low to make a pass in turn one. \u00a0Williamson went to the rear for the restart as Beckner continued to hold tough\u00a0to the lead before Morris was finally able to sneak by on lap 19. \u00a0Collin Allman had a solo spin to bring out the yellow flag on lap 22 while\u00a0Goodrich spun his mount on lap 27 in turn four for yet another caution. \u00a0On\u00a0the restart Williamson, who looked to have the fastest car on the speedway,\u00a0took second from Beckner and began to chase down Morris, passing him on lap\u00a030. \u00a0Action behind the leaders was frantic at this point but the race remained\u00a0under green until the 46th lap when Bowers and Hill tangled in turn four. \u00a0There was an altercation during the caution laps between Beckner and Daniel\u00a0Conlin, Jr. stemming from a run-in as the two battled a few laps earlier\u00a0during the long green flag run. \u00a0Both pitted with Beckner dropping out while\u00a0Conlin took on a new left rear tire and returned to the fray.<!--more--><br \/>\nAfter cooling his tires off under caution, Morris was ready to make a late\u00a0charge and got by Williamson as they completed lap 47. \u00a0Just as the white flag\u00a0was about to be displayed, Allman spun again to set up a green-white-checker\u00a0finish. \u00a0Morris sprinted ahead as the field took the restart but the checker\u00a0and red flags would be waved at the same time as Steve Barnes and Richard\u00a0Fiore, Jr. crashed hard going into turn one. \u00a0Hill and Allman were also caught\u00a0up in the wreck but fortunately all drivers escaped unharmed. \u00a0Morris claimed the victory and was congratulated in Gibson Truck World victory\u00a0lane by Williamson who came home second. \u00a0Derrick Wood ran a steady race to\u00a0claim third spot while Goodrich recovered from his earlier spin to get fourth\u00a0with Bowers coming back for fifth. \u00a0Sixth through tenth were Dwight Farr, Jr.,\u00a0Donny Williams, Mike Pletka, Conlin and Fiore with Barnes, Allman, Hill,\u00a0Beckner, Mike Soukup and Timmy Todd, Jr. the remaining finishers.<\/p>\n<p>Cody Blair blew away the field to win the Pro Late Model feature as he led\u00a0from green to checker. \u00a0Ricky Anderson was involved in a lap 11 altercation\u00a0with Zack Jarrell but came back to make a late pass on Michael Lira to finish\u00a0second ahead of Lira, Will Carroll and Daniel Miller. \u00a0Rounding out the\u00a0finishers were Jarrell, Colby Clements, Tommy Mackey and Tim Viens.<\/p>\n<p>Jarrett Korpi also led every lap of the E-Modified feature race to take his\u00a0second win of the new season. \u00a0Korpi survived some late race caution flags to\u00a0score the victory over Chris Brannon, Roger Benton, John Compagnone, Matthew\u00a0Green, Michael Seay, Jim Higginbotham and Mike Dahm.<\/p>\n<p>Shannon Kelly and Mike Amato came across the stripe in a dead heat to complete\u00a0the first two laps of the Super Stock main event before Amato took over to\u00a0lead the third and fourth laps. \u00a0Defending class champion Kelly powered to the\u00a0front on the fifth lap and never looked back to claim his first win of the\u00a0year. \u00a0Danny Frye slipped by Amato on lap 15 and held second the rest of the\u00a0way with Amato third ahead of J. T.
