\"\"SCOUTING BERLIN:<\/strong> Every entrant in this weekend\u2019s Keyser Manufacturing \u2018Down & Dirty 100\u2019 Presented by NAPA Auto Parts at Berlin Raceway will have the same level of knowledge about the track \u2013 which is to say, none at all.<\/p>\n

Berlin has, of course, operated as a 7\/16th<\/sup>-mile asphalt oval since 1966. But the renowned Wolverine State speedway has been covered with more than 300 truckloads of clay for a historic event headlined by the World of Outlaws Late Model Series, setting up a unique situation in which no one starts with an advantage.<\/p>\n

The inside track on the $20,000 top prize in the Down & Dirty 100 on Saturday night (Sept. 22) will belong to the driver who most quickly deciphers the tricky layout \u2013 and several WoO LMS racers have already visited Berlin Raceway in hopes of learning something, anything<\/em>, that will enhance their hopes.<\/p>\n

One of the WoO LMS regulars who arrived in the area early was Clint Smith of Senoia, Ga. With his hauler parked at Keyser Manufacturing in Coopersville, Mich., Smith made the short drive over to Berlin Raceway on Tuesday with fellow World of Outlaws travelers Tim Fuller of Watertown, N.Y., and Vic Coffey of Caledonia, N.Y.<\/p>\n

Smith, 47, only eyeballed and walked the track, but the stop did give him an idea of what to expect when engines are fired for an open practice session on Thursday evening (Sept. 20) and time trials and heat races roll off on Friday night (Sept. 21).<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there\u2019s gonna be good racing there,\u201d said Smith, who scored one of his 12 career WoO LMS victories in Michigan, in 2005 at Butler Speedway. \u201cThe (surface) was packed good, and it seemed like excellent clay \u2013 no sand or grit to it. That usually means it\u2019s gonna be a good, slick surface, so I would say it\u2019s gonna be fast early and then it will slow down and get slick and there will be some real good racing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith was impressed with the \u201cbig, D-shaped track\u201d and its amenities.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a nice looking place,\u201d said Smith. \u201cAll the buildings look refurbished, the grandstands look nice \u2013 and there are lots of them \u2013 and they\u2019ve got neat group party areas with wooden decks. It looks like a great place to have a big show like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

And what does Smith think about his chances for taking the big money back to the Peach State?<\/p>\n

\u201cSix years ago it wouldn\u2019t have fit my style,\u201d Smith said of Berlin. \u201cBut I think I\u2019m more of a big track racer now and our program has been good this year, so I\u2019m looking forward to it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith is winless on the 2012 WoO LMS, but he\u2019s been knocking on the door to Victory Lane. He has two heartbreaking runner-up finishes this year \u2013 both losses to Darrell Lanigan, the national tour\u2019s most dominating driver this season.<\/p>\n

CHARGE OF THE WOLVERINES: <\/strong>The Down & Dirty 100 ranks as the richest dirt Late Model event ever run in Michigan, so naturally the state\u2019s full-fender drivers would love to defend their turf with a memorable victory. Just ask Jeep VanWormer of Pinconning, who has arguably become Michigan\u2019s most well-known dirt Late Model racer.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would be huge to win it,\u201d said VanWormer, the only Michigan driver who has won a WoO LMS A-Main, in 2007 at LaSalle (Ill.) Speedway. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting to have a race like this in our state. I\u2019m a little rusty because I haven\u2019t raced that much this year, but I\u2019m really hoping to run well in front of the home crowd \u2013 well, we\u2019re as \u2018home\u2019 as anybody I guess \u2013 and maybe get to Victory Lane.\u201d<\/p>\n

VanWormer, 37, lives three hours northeast of Berlin and has never seen a race at the track, but he\u2019s heard nothing but good reports about the speedway. \u201cIt sounds like it\u2019s top-notch,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Dozens of other Michigan drivers are expected to join VanWormer in the Down & Dirty 100 field, including Ryan VanderVeen of Six Lakes, Brian Ruhlman of Clarklake, Curtis Roberts of Coleman, Brandon Thirlby of Traverse City, J.R. Hotovy of Hartford, Alan Vochaska of South Haven, Dona Marcoullier of Houghton Lake, Eric Spangler of Lake City, Rich Neiser of Fruit Port, Adam Thrush of Farwell, Zack Olger of St. Johns and Phil and Doug Ausra of Dowagiac.<\/p>\n

MAN TO WATCH: <\/strong>Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., will bid to enhance his already spectacular \u2013 and record-setting \u2013 2012 WoO LMS campaign at Berlin. A victory in the Down & Dirty 100 would give him an unprecedented third 100-lap WoO LMS win in a single season and rocket him past the $300,000 mark in season earnings.<\/p>\n

A winner of a single-season WoO LMS record 14 A-Mains in \u201912, Lanigan leads the tour\u2019s points standings by 204 points over defending champion Rick Eckert of York, Pa., entering this weekend\u2019s action. With only five points races remaining on the 2012 schedule Lanigan can clinch his second career title by merely finishing no worse than 20th<\/sup> in each event.<\/p>\n

Lanigan has won a WoO LMS A-Main in Michigan, capturing the 2011 event at Hartford Motor Speedway. Other WoO LMS regulars who have been victorious in tour events held in Michigan include Eckert (last month at Winston Speedway in Montague), Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa. (2007 at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa) and Smith.<\/p>\n

This weekend\u2019s WoO LMS roster will also include Coffey, Fuller, 2012 Eldora Dream winner Shane Clanton of Fayetteville, Ga., 2006 champ Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., and Rookie of the Year contenders Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., and Kent Robinson of Bloomington, Ind.<\/p>\n

MAJOR THREATS: <\/strong>The list of high-profile challengers to the World of Outlaws regulars this weekend will be led by three-time tour champion Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark.; former DIRTcar Summer Nationals titlist Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., who won last Saturday night\u2019s WoO LMS Pepsi Nationals at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 in Pevely, Mo.; teenager Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., who drove the familiar Rocket Chassis house car to his first-ever WoO LMS victory last Friday night at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill.; and DIRTcar UMP standout Mike Spatola of Manhattan, Ill.<\/p>\n

FAST CARS:<\/strong> Berlin Raceway\u2019s roundish shape is expected to produce high speeds by the dirt Late Models \u2013 perhaps even faster times than those turned on the pavement by Berlin\u2019s weekly Super Late Models.<\/p>\n

Berlin general manager Mike Bursley told DirtonDirt.com that he sees the dirt Late Models clicking off quicker circuits than the asphalt machines.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel these guys are gonna haul around here,\u201d said Bursley. \u201cI really do feel they\u2019re gonna be faster.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bursley said that Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park promoter Jeremie Corcoran, a former DIRTcar big-block Modified driver who was brought in to oversee the covering of Berlin\u2019s asphalt with clay, will return this weekend to handle track preparation.<\/p>\n

WEEKEND SKED:<\/strong> A full evening of practice for the WoO LMS event and competitors in the weekend\u2019s support divisions is set for Thurs., Sept. 20, from 4-8 p.m. Action will begin on Fri., Sept. 21, with WoO LMS time trials and heat races headlining a program that also includes DIRTcar UMP-sanctioned racing for UMP Modifieds ($2,000 to win), Factory Stocks\/Bombers and 4-Cylinders\/Mini-StockS. The grand finale on Sat., Sept. 22, features WoO LMS B-Mains and the Keyser Manufacturing \u2018Down & Dirty 100\u2019 Presented by NAPA, plus another full UMP Modified show paying $2,000 to win and a Street Stock event.<\/p>\n

Gates will open at 3 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, with racing set to begin at 7 p.m. each day.<\/p>\n

With town ordinances prohibiting racing at Berlin Raceway on Sundays, a raindate of Mon., Sept. 24, has been established for the Down & Dirty 100. If Friday night\u2019s program is rained out, all WoO LMS qualifying will be moved to Saturday evening and Friday\u2019s scheduled support-division competition will be rescheduled for Sat., Sept. 29.<\/p>\n

POST-RACE FUN:<\/strong> Keyser Manufacturing will host a pig roast in the pit area following Thursday evening\u2019s practice for all competitors with pit bands.<\/p>\n
