CLASSIC AUTO RACING SERIES CLOSES OUT 2000 SEASON THIS WEEKEND | The Florida region of the Classic Auto Racing Series closes out the 2000 season this weekend with races at Orlando Speedworld and New Smyrna Speedway. The Classics will join the Dwarf Cars as the only two "racing" classes on Friday night's Crash-A-Rama show at Orlando Speedworld. The Classic Cars will qualify and run a 30-lap feature.
On Saturday, the action shifts to the high-banked half-mile New Smyrna Speedway where the Classics will go 50 laps for the first time. The race will include a fuel stop at mid-race to insure all cars can make the distance on fuel.
A hotly contest points battle will come right down to the wire between current point leader and defending C.A.R.S. champion Rodney Eary of Orlando and fellow Orlandoan Ed Yates who is looking for his first championship after competing in the series every year since its inception.
The Rookie of the Year battle will also come down to the final two nights with both Simeion Spagnuolo of Vero Beach and E.B. Carr of Okeechobee fighting it out.
It has been announced that former C.A.R.S. champion Robert King of Sebring will come out of retirement to drive a car owned by Skip Myers of Baltimore, MD. Several other out-of-state drivers have expressed interest in running the Thanksgiving Specials including Tennessee standout Roy Frank.
Both races are being sponsored by the Law Offices of Art W. Niergarth, Jr., a board certified trial lawyer in Melbourne, FL who specializes in personal injury and wrongful death cases. Niergarth has been a long time supporter of racing in East Central Florida and is a racer himself. Niergarth has also accepted an offer to drive a Classic Car on Friday night at Orlando Speedworld.
Time Trials will be held each night with fast time money being sponsored by local AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants Dealer Michael L. List. Plus an extra $50 is on the line for any driver to break the existing track record at Speedworld (15.905).
The Classic Auto Racing Series is still seeking a Title Sponsor for the 2001 season and also has its own website at www.classicautoracing.com. Have an opinion on this story? Post a message on our Message Board! or send a letter to the editor!
