Kay Triumphant In Florida Pro Late Models | CORDELE, Ga. - Second year late model driver Jonny Kay headlined the Florida Pro Series' first venture out of the Sunshine State Saturday night as he ledwire to wire to win the 125 lap feature event at Cordele Motor Speedway. Kay, who was the fastest qualifier in the 24 car field, drew the pole following time trials, and quickly put his Extensions Plus Pontiac on the point when the green flag waved.
As the field worked the newely paved 3/8 mile oval, Kay led Todd Kuntze, defending series champion Glenn Whitney and Jeff Emery in freight train formation on a very warm Georgia evening. Emery finally worked by Whitney andon lap 78 Whitney hit pit road with a tire which was going flat. At that point Emery moved to second. Maybe the best action on the speedway was Jimmy Cope and Shane Russ coming back through the field as a result of a tangle and twin spin on lap 29. Rick Carlton, who timed a disappointing 18th, steadily moved through the field and joined the top five late in the event but had nothing for Kay who managed to keep himself a pair of car lengths ahead of Emery to the checkers. Whitney kept his Exide Chevy up front all evening and claimed thrid money over Russ and Carlton. Richard Pratt, Kuntze, rookie Travis Kittleson, New York transplant Tom McCann, Jr and 16-year-old Allen Gordon rounded out the top 10 runners. The series now moves to Columbia Motorsports Park in Lake City on May 27. COMPLETE FINISH OF FLORIDA PRO SERIES 125, CORDELE MOTOR SPEEDWAY 5-13-00 SHOWING FINISHING POSITION AND DRIVER: 1.
