A Good Time For Donnie Allison "It was a good day," Donnie Allison of Hueytown,Ala., said Sunday after winning the eight annual Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola. For Donnie Allison it might have been a"good day", but for Ronnie Sanders of Fayetteville,Ga., it was anything but good. Sanders was involved in a feud with Bobby Allison, Donnie's older brother. The feud started after the cars of Bobby Allison and Sanders became entangled in the fourth turn, bring out the 14th yellow caution flag of the 200-lap tace over the half-mile speedway. Sanders tried, in vain, to run down Bobby while both were still on their cars as the more spectators watched. Eventually, Sanders spun his Chevrolet off the No.2 turn, but that still didn'T cool off his temper. Out of his car, Sanders came across the speedway and took a swing with his helmet at Bobby, passing y in his chevrolet. Sanders made his way to his pit area, grabbed a tire tool and went back to the track, threatening to swing at Bobby, who was still in his car. Speedway security officials finally had to take Sanders into custody and escorted him, handcuffed, out of the speedway. While the incident cost Bobby one lap and destroyed his chances of winning, it didn't affect his brother,Donnie, driving his chevelle. Donnie Allison was about three car lenghts ahead of Pensacola's Dicky Davis in second place, and another two car lenghts in third place was Darrell Waltrip of Franklin,Tenn. Ed Howe of Beaverton,Mich., was fourth and Neil Bonnerr of Hueytown,Ala., finished fifth, both in the same lap with the top three finishers. Donnie Allison went the entire distance without a pit stop, collecting $2,790 of the $17,850 purse. Davis earned $1,400 and Waltrip pocketed $1,200. -author unknown ------------------------------- Comments on this story? Florida History Channel Forum |
