Hall, Pacetti And Bedenbaugh Collect Victories At NFS

By Jeff Bean-NSF Media

Lake City, Fl. – On an action packed night of racing that featured the annual tradition of sending the local students back to school with new backpacks filled with supplies five drivers scored feature event wins. Open Wheel Modified action saw Donnie Hall collect his second win in his last three starts. Adam Bedenbaugh returned to familiar territory in victory lane at the end of the Late Model race and Chris Pacetti did the same in Florida Mini Sprint Association action. Nevin Gainey took Strictly Stock honors and Bobby Denard finished up the nights racing with a win in Box Stocks.

Open Wheel Modifieds were the first feature to roll onto the speedway and the field would take two laps in memory of P.J. Wiggins. Steven Skipper would pace the field in his number twenty five Late Model for the memorial laps and the pole position was vacant in honor of the missing number twenty five Modified. As Steven Skipper pulled the honorary pace car off the track Chief Starter Kyle Wiggins would get ready to turn the field loose. At the drop of the green flag Steve Whitener would take full advantage of his pole position starting spot and grab the early lead over Gary Sexton. Caution would wave with one lap complete for the spinning cars of Cody Garner and Kyle Arvin. The next run of green flag laps would prove to be the turning point of the race. First the runner up car of Gary Sexton would make contact with the wall coming off turn two. When the race resumed Whitener would now have Donnie Hall giving chase. But Hall would not have to chase for long as Whitener would slow on the front stretch and roll into the pit area handing the lead to Hall. Point leader David Crews Jr. would move into the runner up spot and try and find a way by the race leader. But Hall was in the lead to stay and he would be the first car to pass under the checkered flag being waved by Kyle Wiggins.

The front row of the Late Model field would be the same as the last race with Mark Whitener on the inside and Adam Bedenbaugh to his outside. And in a replay of the last race it would be Bedenbaugh getting the advantage when the green flag waved. As the leaders put the first lap in the book a three car incident further back in the field would bring out the first of several cautions. This would make it difficult for the field to get a rhythm going. With the numerous restarts Bedenbaugh would give Whitener a look to the inside but he could not find the momentum he would need to overtake the leader. Once things settled down and the field got some consecutive green flag laps in Bedenbaugh would hold on to a comfortable advantage. But the race leader would have one more challenge ahead of him and and that would be a three wide battle at the end of lap sixteen between with himself, Whitener and a lapped car. Once successfully negotiating this obstacle Bedenbaugh would see the familiar sight of the checkered flag and another win for the 2010 Late Model champion.

The Florida Mini Sprint Association always provides entertaining races for the North Florida Speedway fans and they didn’t disappoint anyone this time. With the drop of the green Darrin Davis would take the early lead and then on lap three Gavin Thomas would emerge as the race leader. After sizing Thomas up Davis would wage an attempt to take back the lead on lap seven but then Chris Pacetti joined the fray and would be the leader at the half way mark. A red flag for a flip by John Moss would be the only thing to slow down Pacetti’s march to his second straight win.

Doran Cheney would jump to the early lead in Pure Stock action and pace the field for the first six laps. While looking strong at the front of the field Cheney would see Nevin Gainey go by on the outside on lap seven. One lap later Cheney, Jerry Fortner and Brent Zimmerman would tangle in turn four and Cheney and Zimmerman would suffer extensive damage to their cars and their night would be over. Shane Taylor would suffer some damage to the right side of his car but would be able to continue on. Taylor would spend the rest of the race stalking Gainey and on the last lap he would try both the inside and outside of Gainey but his efforts would come up  short.

The Box Stocks would be the last division to hit the clay and after the first attempt at green was a no go Bryar Zimmerman would lead the first two laps. Lap three would see Bobby Denard move to the lead and from there he had a clear path to the finish. A heated last lap battle for second between Zimmerman and Billy Wilson would see Zimmerman taking second and Wilson facing the wrong way on the front stretch.

Next race night is Saturday September 3rd with the Late Models, Pure Stocks, Street Stocks, Sportsman and Box Stocks scheduled to compete. Visit www.northfloridaspeedway.com or call 386-754-8800 for more info.

Bedenbaugh Out Duels Whitener For NFS Late Model Checkers

By Jeff Bean
Lake City FL – After getting some extra help from Mother Nature in watering the track six divisions took to the speedway with three of the divisions producing first time winners. Adam Bedenbaugh made his eighth trip to victory lane while Kevin Davis rolled to his third win of the 2011 season. Shane Taylor found himself in familiar territory with a win in Pure Stocks. Brian Granthem made his first visit to North Florida Speedway a memorable one with a win in Street Stock. Corey Crews and Duane Paul Jr. would also get their first wins

Sportsman would be the first division to get the feature racing underway and Kevin Davis wasted no time in putting his machine at the front of the field. At the drop of the green Davis would power past Jamie Dayhaw for the lead and after that the race would be for second. After that the only thing to slow Davis was a lap four caution that saw four cars tangle in turn one. From there it was clear sailing for the race winner. Wayne O’Neal finished second to tighten up the point battle between himself and defending champion Jody Turner. Jamie Dayhaw continued his strong runs of late with a third place finish.

Pure Stocks would be next in line to hit the speedway and Brent Zimmerman and Shawn Creech would lead the field to green. Zimmerman would get the early advantage but a back stretch incident would erase that effort before a lap could be scored. Point leader Jerry Fortner would end up being the biggest victim of the opening lap incident as damage to his ride would end his night early. Once the field got back to racing it would be Creech gaining the upper hand and pulling out to the early lead. After a lap three caution for Ed Polbos the field would then get to sort itself out for a green flag run that produced some intense action at the front of the field. Four drivers would now battle it out at the front of the field with Shane Taylor and Andy Olson joining Creech and Zimmerman in the fight for first. With the action going three wide for the lead at times it would be Taylor wrestling the lead from Creech on lap nine. Creech would keep the leader in his sight but Taylor would hold off Creech and Andy Olson for the win.

Adam Bedenbaugh has followed up his championship season of 2010 with some more championship caliber efforts this season as well. At the drop of the green Bedenbaugh would surge past pole sitter Bo Allen. Mark Whitener would move to second and apply the pressure to Bedenbaugh. The first of two scares would come on lap eight for the race leader as Lee Newsome would spin on the exit of turn two as the race leaders were bearing down on him. Everybody would be able to take evasive action and clear the spinning car. Lap fourteen would see a repeat of the close call as Newsome would again spin with Bedenbaugh closing in and once again the field would avoid the spinning car. After that Bedenbaugh would hold off Whitener and Clay Bedenbaugh for the win.

When Brian Granthem loaded up and left Douglas Ga. his plans didn’t include a trip to Lake City but with Mother Nature throwing a monkey wrench into those plans forcing a cancellation at Waycross he decided to keep on driving and make his first visit to NFS. Granthem would make it to the speedway in time for his heat race and then the redraw would see him starting on the front row. Quickly making his way to the lead Granthem would lead until the caution appeared on lap four. On the restart he would continue to pace the field when the caution would come out again on lap eight. Granthem still kept his car at the front of the field but David Tyrrell would pressure the race leader all around the track lap after lap. Tyrrell would get plenty of looks to the inside of Granthem but the race leader had his car hooked up on the high side of the track and would find his way to victory in his first appearance at NFS.

Limited Modifieds would roll out next and the start would see Adam Higginbotham get to the lead from row number two. On lap two the yellow would wave as Timmy Roach would climb the guard rail on the front stretch. Cliff Suber would also find himself involved. On the restart Higginbotham would lose the handle in turn two but the field would be able to avoid him. This would be the break Duane Paul Jr. was looking for as he would inherit the lead. Paul would then hold off division point leader Shane Taylor and collect his first win in Limited Mod action and deny Taylor a second trip to victory lane on the evening.

Rookie Corey Crews has been getting stronger with each start in the Box Stock division and tonight would be the night it all came together. Crews would move to the lead as the green flag waved over the field and his time at the front of field would not be interrupted. Billy Wilson and point leader Bryar Zimmerman would stalk the race leader but Crews would be up to the task and make his first career victory a wire to wire affair.

Next race night for the North Florida Speedway will be August 20th. The always popular back to school backpack night will be on tap. Also on the card for that evening will be Late Models, Pure Stocks, Open Wheel Modifieds, Box Stocks and the Florida Mini Sprint Association. Grady Christian Takes The $2000 Payday At NFS

By Jeff Bean-NFS Media

Lake City FL – Grady Christian of Umatilla Fl. ended up being the big winner in Saturday nights Street Stock feature after apparent winner Dave Dowling’s winning car failed post race tech inspection. Kyle Chappell topped the $1000 to win Sportsman feature by holding off a hard charging David Tyrrell. Jerry Fortner collected a $1000 victory in Pure Stock action with a green to checker run. 2010 Open Wheel Modified champion Kyle Owen returned to capture a thrilling finish over Paul Sizemore Jr. Bobby Denard capped off the action Saturday night with his second trip to victory lane in Box Stocks on the 2011 season.

Sportsman would be the first division to take to the speedway for the extra money on the line and Kyle Chappell would take advantage of his pole position start to grab the early lead from Jody Turner. The first trip down the back straightaway had an incident that saw perennial threat Kevin Davis nose first up against the wall with damage that would end his bid before one lap was complete. When action resumed another top contender Ed Gainey would spin to the bottom of turn one but he was able to continue with little damage to his ride. David Tyrrell would move into second and Jamie Dayhaw would settle into third as Chappell enjoyed a comfortable margin at the front of the field. With two laps to go the race leader would encounter lapped traffic and make contact with a lapped car but would still maintain his lead. Behind Chappell the traffic would collect Jamie Dayhaw and the caution would appear. On the restart Tyrrell would get the break he needed and take the lead away from Chappell. But lady luck would still favor Chappell as another caution would wave before a lap could be completed and Tyrrel’s hard work would be negated. On the next restart Chappell would be able to keep his hold on the lead and be the first car to the checkered flag. Tyrrell would hold on for second and Eddie Gainey would complete the top three.

Paul Sizemore Jr. would hustle to the early lead in the Open Wheel Modified feature by getting by pole sitter Brandon Cameron. As Sizemore would pace the field with Cameron giving chase Kyle Owen would be making his way to the front of the field and prepare to make his bid for the lead. After getting by Cameron the 2010 Mod champ Owen would close up to Sizemore and these two would wage a thrilling battle for the lead. Owen would throw everything he had at Sizemore and on the last lap the pair would make the battle for the win a physical one. Contact on the back straight would have the crowd going wild but Owen was not done yet. As the pair worked through the final turn Owen would find the room and bite he needed to win the drag race to the finish and edge Sizemore out by a few feet to claim the win.

The Street Stock main event would have the veteran pair of Dave Dowling and Randy Moody on the front row and those two would battle for the lead but a slew of cautions would make it difficult for the field to get a rhythm going early on. Once things got settled in Dowling would have to fend off Moody several times before Moody lost the handle and spun in turn four collecting Nevin Gainey. With the laps winding down Dowling would now find himself being chased by some stout competition in the form of Grady Christian, Tim Powers and Tommy Hill. Christian would apply heavy pressure to the race leader at times being able to pull up along side of Dowling but couldn’t quite find his way around the leader. Dowling would go on to be the first car to the finish line but the car did not pass the post race technical inspection. With Christian moved up to the winners spot Tim Powers and Tommy Hill continued their strong runs with top three finishes. Unable to get his interview in what he said was his biggest win Grady would like to thank the people that made his winning effort possible. Independent Drilling Contractors, his engine builder and brother Bo and the entire Christian Brothers Racing Team. Grady said he also wanted to thank the fans for coming out and supporting the race.

The Pure Stocks would be next up with $1000 dollars awaiting the race winner. Current point leader Jerry Fortner started on the pole and wasted no time moving to the lead over Dave Kinsey. Fortner would find himself being chased by a strong group of drivers but he would manage to keep his grip on the top spot. Windal Clark would emerge from the pack and spend several laps looking for a way to get around Fortner but the race leader would turn back all of Clark’s challenges. As the laps were winding down Eddie Gainey would rally from the back of the pack to put himself in contention for the win. With time running out Gainey would move around Clark for second and make his challenge on Fortner’s race long lead. In the end Gainey’s rally from the tail of the field would would come up one spot short as Fortner would collect his second win of the 2011 season.

In the night cap Bobby Denard would race past Daryl Larson for a lead he wouldn’t relinquish. Larson would settle in to the second spot and would soon have his hands full with Kevin Underwood trying to take the second spot away. Once clear of Larson the goal for Underwood was to close the gap on Denard and he would soon pull himself into contention. As the pair battled for the lead with the laps running out Underwood launch his attack only to have his efforts derailed by a flat tire with one lap left. Denard would then hold off John Windham and Larson for his second win of 2011.

Feature events contested Friday night would have Shane Taylor taking yet another feature event win in the Limited Modifieds over Adam Higginbotham and Kyle Arvin. Friday nights Box Stock feature went to John Windham.

Next week August 8th the Late Models return along with Pure Stocks, Street Stocks, Limited Modifieds, Sportsman and Box Stocks. For more info visit www.northfloridaspeedway.com or call 386-754-8800

Tyler Ivey Captures NLMS Victory At North Florida Speedway

By Jeff Bean-NFS Media

Lake City FL -The “Tallahassee Terror” Tyler Ivey used an early race restart to overtake Brandon DeWitt and turned away several challenges to win Saturday nights National Late Model Series race at North Florida Speedway.Jason Davis sped to victory in Open Wheel Modified action. Andy Olson nabbed his first Pure Stock feature of the 2011 season while Street Stock point leader Marty Smith stood in victory lane for the third time this year. Daryl Larson scored his first career win in Box Stock action.

Twenty One Late Models lined up for their forty lap feature and fast qualifier Brandon Dewitt would set the pace for the first four laps when J.R. Moseley would bring out the first caution. As the green flag waved for the restart Travis Carter would spin in turn one setting up another restart attempt. The next start was good and Tyler Ivey would power past DeWitt for the lead on lap five. Lap eight would see the caution fly again as Larry Anderson spun around in turn two. Ivey would soon encounter lapped traffic on lap eighteen and at the halfway point Anderson spun again in front of the majority of the field to bring out the caution. As the field circled the track under caution Anderson and Clay Bedenbaugh made contact with each other a couple of times with Anderson being summonsed to the infield for the remainder of the race. As the field took the green for the restart the field got bottled up with Austin Kirkpatrick being the loser in the fray as he ended up on his roof at the end of the front straightaway. Fortunately Kirkpatrick was okay as he quickly exited his damaged machine on his own. After a delay the race would resume but Dewitt and Mark Whitener could not find a way to get around Ivey and the 2010 NLMS series champion would be the first to the checkers.

P.J. Wiggins would lead the Open Wheel Modifieds to green but with one lap in the books third place car David Crews Jr. would roll to a stop at the exit of turn four. Under caution Wiggins would have to go to the pit area to change a flat tire and this handed the lead over to Jason Davis. Wiggins would rejoin the field but bring out the caution on lap two. While Davis would survive multiple cautions Dave Wansley and Josh Sanford would stage an entertaining battle for second. As the laps wound down and Davis would enjoy a comfortable lead early race leader Wiggins would work his way back to the front of the field and join Sanford and Wansley in their battle for second and third. Davis would cruise home to the win with Sanford second and Wiggins third.

Nineteen cars would make up the field for the Pure Stock feature with Richard Reed and Andy Olson on the front row. Olson would move to the early lead with John Roberts and Jerry Fortner battling for position behind him. By lap seven 2010 Pure Stock Champ Shane Taylor would work his way up to second from his eighth starting spot and set his sights on the race leader. Olson would see his comfortable lead erased on lap ten as the caution would come out for a spin by Jim Langtry and Bernie Thrift. The field would get one lap in before Alan Bedenbaugh brought out the caution again. Olson would be able to hold off Taylor for the win with John Roberts rounding out the top three.

The Street Stock field would have Dan Gifford and Tim Harrell on the front row. Gifford would take the early lead and find himself being challenged by Kenny Hicks and Randy Barnhart. Barnhart would take over the top spot and lead until lap eleven when point leader Marty Smith would wrestle the lead from Barnhart after moving through the field from his tenth starting position. Lap twelve would see Smith going for a spin with help from Barnhart. Smith would be put back in his spot with Barnhart going to the tail for his involvement in the incident. From there Smith would hold off Randy Clark Jr. and Randy Moody for win number three of 2011.

Box Stocks would round out the nights racing action and Daryl Larson and point leader Bryar Zimmerman would bring the field to the green flag. Larson would move to the early lead with Zimmerman and Cory Crews giving chase. Lap two would be the first caution of the night as Crews made contact with Zimmerman in turn two. One lap later Billy Wilson and Crews would bring out another caution. Lap five would be the end of the night for Zimmerman as contact from Bobby Denard would see Zimmerman spin to the top of turn one and then get collected by Wilson. From there Larson would run to the checkered flag to collect his first victory in his rookie season. Cory Crews and Steven Wetherington would round out the top three.
