Friesen’s Big-Block Modified Roots Helped Create NASCAR Ride

friesen-nascar-storyBy Clayton Johns (CONCORD, N.C.) — Jan. 11, 2017 —One of the biggest stars of the Super DIRTcar Series will race full-time in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series come 2017. Sprakers, NY driver Stewart Friesen has partnered with Chris Larsen to create Halmar Friesen Racing for his first full-time foray into NASCAR Racing, he announced Monday. Tommy Baldwin Jr. will be the team’s crew chief.

“We got our feet wet in it last year and the opportunity came to team up with Tommy Baldwin and his operation so it was a no-brainer for us. We combined forces and I’m really looking forward to it,” Friesen said.

Friesen made his NASCAR Truck Series debut last July at Eldora Speedway, NASCAR’s only race on dirt. The ride was supposed to be a one-time deal, but quickly blossomed into five more races for Friesen before the end of 2016. It led to the formation of his new team, which will be based in Mooresville, NC.

“We had just planned to do Eldora and have some fun with it, but it kind of lit a fire under everyone and the decision was made to try and do more,” Friesen explained. “We really learned a lot and met some great people along the way. Now we’ve kind of upped our game to the next level.” (more…)

Super Matt is The Man To Beat

Clinches first Le RPM Speedway victory

lerpm_sheppard(By Mandee Pauch) ST. MARCEL DE RICHELIEU, QUE. – Sept. 9, 2016 – Matt Sheppard is no stranger to victory lane as he captured his third Super DIRTcar Series win in a row and his ninth overall Friday night at Le RPM Speedway.

“This car has been so good lately. We just unloaded it and it’s been fast all night. We set fast time, won the heat and drew a good starting spot for the feature. When you have a car that good it makes your life pretty easy,” Sheppard said.

Keith Flach and Sheppard led the 30-car field to the green. It didn’t take long for Sheppard to jump to an early lead as he pulled away from the field on the initial start.

It didn’t take long for Sheppard to catch lapped traffic on the ¼ mile as he caught the back end of the field on lap nine as he showed a comfortable lead over Flach.

A lap 21 restart saw Flach drive around the outside of Sheppard to take the top spot back.

Heavy lapped traffic got in the way of Flach as Sheppard took advantage and retook the lead off the bottom on lap 37. (more…)

Sheppard Scores $17,500 Victory at Lebanon Valley

Captures His First Mr. Dirt Track USA 100

LEBANON-VALLEY(By Mandee Pauch) WEST LEBANON, N.Y – Sept. 1, 2016 – Matt Sheppard made a late race charge by Kenny Tremont Jr. and set his No. 9s machine on cruise control at Lebanon Valley Speedway for the Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modified Mr. Dirt Track USA 100.

After Sheppard took a wild ride at Canandaigua on Saturday totaling his car, his team was able to regroup in no time to take the checkers Thursday night and capture the $17,500 victory. “I can’t thank enough people. Bicknell practically built this racecar in a day; the lettering guy lettered it the day we picked it up. Every one of the manufacturers stepped right out,” Sheppard said. “This thing didn’t miss a beat tonight. This is what championships are made of. It was a big turning point from Saturday to tonight. Our season could have gone down hill in a hurry but instead we’re sitting here in victory lane at Lebanon Valley.” (more…)

Tomkins Makes Last Lap Stunner at Weedsport

Captures His First Super DIRTcar Series Victory Since 2008

TOMKINS_Weedsport(Mandee Pauch) WEEDSPORT, N.Y. – Aug. 9, 2016 – Just when everyone thought the race was over it was Gary Tomkins who made a last lap pass over Erick Rudolph to capture the Super DIRTcar Series Hall of Fame 100 at Weedsport Speedway and take home the $10,000 paycheck.

“That last restart the tires didn’t feel right so I went to the bottom, got my rhythm back and caught back up to Erick,” Tomkins said in victory lane. “I stuck it into one that one time and it stuck and I thought ‘oh boy here we go.’ I thought maybe if Erick gave me room on the front stretch we could do it and he did.”

Rudolph and Stewart Friesen brought the 30-car field to the initial green.

Rudolph held on strong to position No. 1 over Friesen as Friesen worked the outside lane to chase him down. (more…)

Friesen Rebounds at Ransomville

Takes Home Summer Nationals Victory

RANSOMVILLE_Friesen(By Mandee Pauch) RANSOMVILLE, N.Y. – Aug 2, 2016 – Stewart Friesen keeps it in the family once again as he captured the Super DIRTcar Series Summer Nationals at Ransomville Speedway Tuesday night for the second year in a row. Friesen’s night started off on a bad note as he damaged his car in time trials and was forced to bring out his back-up car. That didn’t stop Friesen and the Halmar team from rebounding to take home the victory.

“This is awesome. The Halmar team worked so hard tonight. This is Uncle Alex’s race and always will be Uncle Alex’s race and to get it again is so special,” Friesen said in victory lane. “I’ll tell you what, I wasn’t sure of what to think of this track when I got here but it was super racy. It stayed slick and wide. The guys were doing a great job. I hope my old man is getting a break and enjoying a couple of beers tonight. This is for Stan and Alex!” (more…)

Smooth Sailing for Super Matt Sheppard at Eldora Speedway

Wins First Ever Big-Block Modified Race at Eldora Speedway

Eldora2_pictureROSSBURG, O.H. – July 20, 2016 – The 25-lap Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds invitational exhibition at Eldora Speedway Wednesday night saw Matt Sheppard lead the field from green to checkered to score his first ever Big-Block modified feature at the ‘Big E.’

“It means a lot to win here. I mean, after last night anything that could go wrong went wrong,” said Sheppard about his sixteenth place finish the night before. “Turning it around tonight just shows how great this team is and how fast this race car is.”

As the special feature kicked off at the legendary half-mile, Sheppard jumped out to a sizable early lead as Brett Hearn followed in second.

The first caution of the night was brought out on lap four as second place runner, Hearn, slowed to a stop in turns one and two for a shredded tire.

On the restart, the crowd saw Rich Scagliotta, Frank Cozze, and Peter Britten battling for the second spot.

Britten was running up against the outside wall trying to gain some ground on Scagliotta in second place and was able to charge to the outside and chase him down for the second spot. (more…)

Tim Fuller Conquers Return of the Big-Blocks to Eldora Speedway

Fuller fends off big field at The Big E, Captures Aspen Dental Dirt Derby 100

ELDORA(Mandee Pauch) ROSSBURG, Ohio – July 19, 2016 – After a 10-year absence the Super DIRTcar Series Big-Block Modifieds returned to Eldora Speedway Tuesday night as Tim Fuller battled through the field and claimed his second series victory of the year.

For Fuller, the win was his second big-block modified victory at the historic half-mile oval in Rossburg, Ohio since 2006.

‘I’m real happy,” Fuller said. “We won the last modified race here in 2006 and then Tony Stewart buys it and I get to win it. It’s really good – it’s a very special place.”

“I knew it was going to make the start of the race way better after I drew 12th. It actually opened up the racing and it made it where there was a bottom, middle, and a top. You could float all over this place. It was really a lot of fun.”

The win did not come without a little adversity at the front of the pack as several drivers battled for that top spot. (more…)

Nick Hoffman Makes It a Weekend Sweep at Oakshade

Series Returns to Action on July 29 and 30 at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway

071616HoffmanOakshadeWAUSEON, Ohio – July 16, 2016 – Saturday’s DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals feature at Oakshade Speedway was again the Brian Ruhlman and Nick Hoffman show – and again, it was Nick Hoffman who came out on top.

Ruhlman started on the front row and quickly pulled to the lead. It took Hoffman slightly more time to clear for second, but once he did, the two leaders pulled away from the field.

A mid-race restart gave Hoffman the shot he needed – when the green flag flew Hoffman took the highline and battled around Ruhlman. Hoffman maneuvered through traffic late and held off Ruhlman through a restart to sweep the weekend double-header at Oakshade Raceway.

The win is sixth of the season for Hoffman who leads the series points going into the final events. (more…)
