After several weeks of picture-perfect weather, fans had to brave some cool temperatures Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway but were treated to some great red-hot racing.

Another good field of Street Stocks saw Bobby Mobley and point leader Matt McCrary win the heat races and start the 20 lap feature from the front row. McCrary set the pace for the first pair of laps before Mobley got by on the low side to snatch the top spot on lap three.

Dave Colpritt and Jeff Waterman tangled while battling for third place on lap 10 with both spinning in turn two. Kevin O’Quinn, making his first start in quite some time, could not avoid Colpritt’s car and ran into him. Colpritt was done for the night while both Waterman and O’Quinn restarted at the rear of the restart line-up. Kyle Peters, the previous weeks winner, also dropped out at this point with his car trailing fluid.

Mobley continued to set the pace but McCrary got a second wind and was nearly by him with two laps to go when Waterman and Levi Parsons tangled up in turn four to bring out the caution. On the restart, Waterman seemed to have something break and he spun on the front stretch and was drilled by Parsons. Both drivers were shaken but unhurt and their cars left the track on the hook.

Mobley held off a furious attack by McCrary to take his fifth win of the year while McCrary added to his point lead by finishing second. Waterman had entered the evening just 16 points behind McCrary, but lost considerable ground as his incident dropped him to a tenth place finish.

Michael King made his first start of the year a good one as he drove to a well-earned third place while Jammie Dunnahoe was fourth and Chris Spring fifth.

After two false starts, heat winner Jason Rendell looked to be the man to beat as he built up a big lead in the headliner for the Modified Mini Stocks. Mike Sweet, who is chasing Scotty Sharpe for the point championship in the class, passed Sharpe for second on lap seven and set sail after Rendell. Sweet caught the leader and made his pass on lap 14 then raced unchallenged the rest of the way to claim his fourth win of the year and tighten up the point race with just one event remaining this year.

Rendell held on for second with Sharpe third in front of Nathan Florian and Bo Collier.

Marilyn McCrary caught and passed heat winner Kevin Steadman on lap six and went on to score her second consecutive Mini Stock feature victory. Jason Swilley came on late to finish second with Steadman third ahead of Donnie Guy and Bill Calder.

Kimberly Gullett led green to checker to snare her sixth Scrambler win of the season. The win, coupled with her heat race victory, makes the 15-year-old lady driver from Lakeland the class champion for 2010.

Trailing Gullett to the checker were Brian Tyre, Richard Brown, Chad Cutting and Jerry Cutting.

Preston Davis scored his seventh V-8 Bomber win of the season passing heat winner Alan Seay on lap 12 and never looking back. Seay held off Larry Chumney, Sr. for second while Jared Meyer and James Wright, Jr. were fourth and fifth.

There were five lead changes and plenty of three-wide action in the School Bus Figure 8 race before Gary Swing charged to the front on the last lap to win for the second time this season. Dustin Aaron came home a very close second trailed by Robert Aaron, Marcus Sumner and David Ross.

This coming Saturday night the Auburndale Trucks return along with the Sportsman cars, Street Stocks, V-8 Bombers, Mini Stocks, Legend Cars, Bandoleros and Kids Club. For more information call 863-551-1131 or log on to www.auburndaleracing.com powered by Palm Tree Computers.
