Lucas Oil Late Models Return to Action

BATAVIA, OH (March 12, 2018) – The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will resume competition this week with a visit to Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, OH on Friday, March 16th – followed by Brownstown Speedway in Brownstown, IN on Saturday, March 17th.

A strong contingent of local and regional standouts are expected to battle the elite drivers of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series in the 4th Annual Buckeye Spring 50. The event will feature a complete program of: Miller Welders Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and a 50-lap, $12,000-to-win main event. The Open Wheel Modifieds will compete for $1,000-to-win.

Brownstown Speedway will host the John Jones Auto Group 21st Annual Indiana Icebreaker on Saturday, March 17th. Stormy Scott Soars to USMTS Win at Whynot

Stormy Scott turned his season around in a big way with a thrilling victory in the fifth round of the 9th Annual Summit USMTS Winter Speedweeks presented by MSD Performance Saturday night at the Whynot Motorsports Park.

After failing to even make it to the finish line in all four of the previous main events in this 2018 campaign, the 2-year-old from Las Cruces, N.M., put it all together at the ‘House of Hook’ after a spirited tussle with Cade Dillard in the caution-free 40-lapper.

Jason Krohn stepped up to the plate from his front row start and led most of the first half of the race with Dillard breathing down his neck and Scott lingering in third. With 15 laps down, Scott went by Dillard and then powered underneath Krohn for the lead as they came to the flagstand to complete lap 18.

Forced to navigate lapped traffic the rest of the way, Scott and Dillard sped away from the field with Scott showing the way on the bottom and Dillard on the gas around the high side.

With 13 laps to go, Dillard shot by Scott down the back-stretch and led for the first time this season with 28 orbits in the books.

Scott remained faithful to the short way around the smooth 3/8-mile of red clay and reeled Dillard back in, eventually taking the lead for good with just six laps left as he won going away for his 45th career USMTS triumph and a $3,000 payday.

Dillard was a solid second while the younger of the Scott twins-Johnny-clawed his way to third after starting 13th. Thirty minutes earlier, he came from last in his Real Racing Wheels “B” Main to win that and get a spot in the main event.

Krohn held off Lucas Schott for fourth with Dereck Ramirez, Lucas Lee, Jake O’Neil, Toby Hodge and Friday night’s winner, Zack VanderBeek, rounding out the top 10.

After five events in the Summit USMTS Southern Series powered by Production Jars, Johnny Scott remains the points leader by two markers over Dillard (466 to 464), followed by Ethan Dotson (394), Rodney Sanders (366), Dereck Ramirez (360), Joe Duvall (359), Bryan Rowland (341), Carlos Ahumada Jr. (335), Logan Robertson (334) and Zane Ferrell (324).

After two events in the USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup powered by S&S Fishing & Rental, Dillard is on top with 187 points followed by Schott (179), Johnny Scott (178), VanderBeek (172), O’Neil (160), Ramirez (157), Stormy Scott (155), Jake Timm (147), Krohn (142) and Robertson (130).

Sunday’s event at the Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss., has been rained out, so the next event on deck is the King of America VIII presented by Summit Racing Equipment on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 15-17, at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kan.

VanderBeek Collects Victory after Lee’s Setback at Jackson Motor Speedway

BYRAM, Miss. (March 9)–The meanest modifieds on the planet converged on the Jackson Motor Speedway Friday for round 4 of the 9th Annual Summit USMTS Winter Speedweeks presented by MSD Performance and a dual event with the Summit USMTS Southern Series and USMTS Hunt for the Casey’s Cup national tour.

Sybesma Graphics Pole Award winner Stormy Scott of Las Cruces, N.M., grabbed the lead at the the start but Tennessee’s Lucas Lee used the high line around the 3/8-mile dirt oval to steal the top spot away on the fourth lap with 2016 USRA Modified national champion Lucas Schott, Arizona’s Jake O’Neil and four-time and defending USMTS national champion Jason Hughes following in their tire tracks.

The first half of the race was riddled with yellow flags. The fourth flew for Hughes on lap 10 , and he did not return to finish the last 40 laps. Two-time USMTS national champ Rodney Sanders slowed on lap 16 to bring out the fifth caution and did not return either.

Jason Krohn of Slayton, Minn., pulled to the infield on lap 20, leaving no former national champs in the field. The seventh caution waved on lap 22 for Scott who has yet to complete a main event.

Meanwhile, Lee continued to pound the cushion with Schott, VanderBeek and chasing the leader around the high side until the eighth caution waved with eight laps remaining.

Under yellow, 16th-starting and fourth-running Terry Phillips left the track with a flat tire and when the green flag returned VanderBeek powered in front of Schott to control second place.

Lee and VanderBeek separated themselves from the pack and finally reached lapped traffic with 10 laps to go with Cade Dillard entering the picture when a stray bumper in turn one forced the race’s final caution with eight laps remaining.

From there, VanderBeek shadowed Lee around the race track but Lee was able to hold back the challenges and appeared destined for his career-first USMTS win, but after taking the checkered flag first he was disqualified during post-race technical inspections for an engine setback violation.

Lee’s lost glory gave the victory to VanderBeek, along with the $3,000 winner’s share of the prize money.

“We were kind of just right there with Lucas Lee but he had a pretty good car,” VanderBeek said during his delayed victory speech. “Unfortunately, there’s rules and you’ve got to follow them and it sucks, but we all have to take that plunge if we have that happen to us.”

It was VanderBeek’s 43rd career USMTS triumph, jumping him one spot ahead of Tommy Myer to sixth on the all-time wins list and one behind Stormy Scott’s 44 wins.

Schott finished with a runner-up effort and Dillard climbed from 13th to third in the contest. Johnny Scott was fourth and Jake O’Neil rounded out the top five. Sixth through tenth, respectively, were Jake Timm, Paul Niznik, Dereck Ramirez, Ethan Dotson and Logan Robertson.

Dillard captured last year’s inaugural visit to the Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Miss., where the series will return on Saturday, March 10, as the touring titans of the USMTS bring the boom to the “House of Hook” in Meridian with six racing divisions on tap.

Adults are $20 to get in the grandstands, kids age 6-12 are $10. Pit passes are $35 for adults, $15 for kids ages 6-12. Children 5 and under get in for free on both sides of the fence.

The action reaches a boiling point on Sunday, March 11, as the meanest machines in America make their maiden voyage to the legendary Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus for a wheel-to-wheel showdown at “The Mag” with four classes in action including 604 Crate Late Models, 602 Crate Late Models and Factory Stocks.

The pit gate opens at 1 p.m. and spectator gates open at 3. Hot laps start at 4:45 and the green flag waves at 5:15. Grandstand tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and military, $10 for juniors ages 11-16 and kids ages 10 and under are free.

The Magnolia Motor Speedway is a 3/8-mile dirt oval located near the intersection of US 82 and US 45 (take the Macon/Meridian exit off US 82). The track’s website is www.magnoliadirt.com.

Over $38,000 Up For Grabs At 2nd Annual Bash At The Beach Southern All Stars At Southern Raceway

FAYETTEVILLE, TN—The Southern All Stars Dirt Racing Series presented by Max Fab returns to action this Friday & Saturday night at Southern Raceway in Milton, FL., March 16th & 17th. Track owner Tom Lowery said this morning that as of right now it should be perfect weather as temperatures during the day will be around 80 degrees and lows at night in the 60’s,so it should for a great weekend of racing at the 3/8ths mile track located east of Pensacola, FL.

Action gets underway with a Thursday night March 15th practice session from 6pm-10pm.

Friday pit gates open at 3 pm, and hot laps scheduled for 6pm.The Southern All Stars portion of the program will feature SUNOCO Race Fuels qualifying locking in the top five from each group, PPM Racing Products B Mains and a 40 lap feature paying $4,000 to win.

Saturday pits and hot lap times remain the same and the Southern All Stars portion of the program will remain the same except the feature will be 50 laps paying $5,000 to win.

This will be the second stop of the season for the series and will be the second year in a row that the series has been to Southern as Casey Roberts of Toccoa, GA., took wins both nights.

FANS ENDURE LONG NIGHT TO SEE BOYD AND McLEOD VICTORIOUS IN SLM AND WHEELMAN SPORTSMAN

To say it was a very long Saturday night (and Sunday morning) at Auburndale Speedway was definitely an understatement as fans first had to endure an hour-and-a-half rain delay followed by three races dotted with numerous red flags, cautions and lengthy track clean-ups. Despite the action not ending until just after 1 am, a large crowd stayed to the bitter end and were treated to some fine racing between all the delays.

The big race of the night was the Spring 125 for the Super Late Models presented by WPCV 97.5 Country Radio. Seventeen Super Late Model teams were in attendance and it was a big surprise when Polk City’s Josh Todd topped the time trials with a lap of 13.740 seconds in a brand new car that was “right out of the box.” Aaron Williamson timed in second quick at 13.782 just ahead of the 13.812 lap of Brandon Duchscherer who was also at the wheel of a sparkling new ride. Local veteran Chris Fontaine was fourth quick while fifth fastest was Noah “Lil’ Gator” Cornman who was impressive in his first-ever visit to the track. The invert would be an eight placing Devin McLeod on the pole for the big race.

McLeod sped out to an early lead as the field raced close behind him. Lap 11 saw the first caution flag fly when Jeff Gordon spun his machine on the back stretch. Joe Boyd had the outside front row on the restart and made quick work of McLeod to grab the top spot. John Coffman looped his mount on lap 15 to bring out yellow flag number two.

Boyd pulled out to a near straightaway lead by the time the next caution was unfurled on lap 34 as Gordon spun on the front stretch. On the restart, Fontaine zipped by McLeod for second. Duchscherer slipped by McLeod on lap 40 bringing Williamson and Todd with him. McLeod’s car was faltering and he dropped back to sixth while Boyd again built up a big lead.

Lap 48 saw the yellow out again for a Coffman-Cornman tangle in turn one with both continuing. On the restart Duchscherer, Todd and Williamson freight-trained Fontaine to move up in the running order behind Boyd. The field then settled into some green flag racing although McLeod was continuing to have a rough go of it and dropped from the running on lap 67. Four laps later the right front tire went down on Williamson’s car and he exited to the pits in a shower of sparks as the caution came out yet again.

Just after the restart a multi-car melee took place in turn four that eliminated Cornman from the running. The red flag was displayed for a lengthy clean-up of fluids on the track. Once the field took the green again Todd was on a mission as he moved by Duchscherer into second on lap 82 and set his sights on Boyd. Shortly after, Blaise Hetznecker and Steve Dorer got by Fontaine to move into fourth and fifth places. Dorer then got by Hetznecker for fourth on the 97th lap.

Meanwhile Todd had moved up on Boyd to challenge for the lead as Fontaine fell from the race on lap 99 with a sick engine. A final caution flew on lap 104 as Coffman spun in turn two setting up a dash to the checker.

Todd battled side-by-side with Boyd for a couple of laps but had to settle in behind him. From that point Boyd held sway to the checker with Todd right in his slipstream. Duchscherer came home third while Dorer, who had started well back in the field, coming home fourth after a fine drive. Fifth went to Hetznecker while Williamson rebounded for a sixth place effort. David King, Brian Dorer, Stuart Dutton and Coffman rounded out the top ten.

Also on tap was a 50-lap run for the Brandon Ford Wheel Man Sportsman Series presented by Gagel’s Auto Parts, Racecar Engineering and Autotech Collision Center. 22 top machines signed in to do battle with Clermont’s Jason Vail topping qualifying with a lap of 14.276 seconds. Second in time trials was Aaron Williamson who tripped the clocks at 14.285 followed closely by Devin McLeod, Travis Roland and Brett Jenkins. Vail would find himself starting mid-pack as the invert was a whopping 14 cars.

Despite the big field, the start was clean as Rex Struble led the opening circuit before giving way to Adam Briggs who was out front when the first caution flew on lap six for a tangle between Brett Jenkins and Mark Peterson.
Vail was said to have caused the incident by getting into Jenkins and he went to the tail of the restart line-up.

Struble got back by Briggs on the restart with Joe Winchell and Craig Cuzzone moving up to second and third on lap 12. Lap 19 saw Williamson and Colton Bramlett get together going down the front stretch with Bramlett going hard into the wall. Bramlett’s car was towed from the track – not a good way for the night to end for the young man who celebrated his 16th birthday the day before. Williamson pitted but returned after repairing the damage to his car.

The veteran Winchell turned up the wick after the restart and snared to lead from Struble while Cuzzone slipped into second on lap 26. One lap later, Briggs spun to bring out the yellow and he took his mount pit side.
Meanwhile, Vail had moved into the top ten with Williamson also charging back into 11th.

The restart was aborted when Brett Jenkins and Rick Reed got together on the front stretch, however both kept going with minor damage. The next attempt saw Williamson spin in turn three as something broke on his machine. He pitted but did not return. Try number three saw a massive mess take place off turn four. When the dust settled, the cars of Brandon Morris, Vail, McLeod, Steven O’Steen and Shawn Jenkins all had damage. All but Jenkins stayed in the running.

Action resumed but only for a pair of laps before Cuzzone and Struble tangled coming down the front stretch with both spinning wildly into turn one.
Cuzzone was done for the night while Struble continued. On the ensuing restart McLeod moved into second spot bringing Travis Roland with him just before Brandon Martin spun on the front stretch to bring out the caution on lap 31.

McLeod out-gunned Winchell on the restart and grabbed the lead with Roland following him into second. Winchell was now being hounded by Vail for third.
The final yellow flag flew on lap 45 as Brett Jenkins spun in turn three.

The old term “rubbin’ is racin'” held sway on the last restart as there was plenty of contact among the leaders. McLeod held his own while Vail made a banzai charge to second. Winchell and Roland traded paint with Winchell grabbing third at the checker followed by Roland and Morris. Jesse Henley finished off a steady run with a sixth place effort while Brooke Storer, Struble, Mark Peterson and Brett Jenkins completed the top ten.

The Legend Cars were in action for 25 laps with 13 cars in the starting field.
Old pro Mitch Verhaagh zipped into the early lead but action came to a screeching halt on the third lap when the engine exploded in Taylor Hosford’s car going into turn three while she was running third. Despite a massive amount of smoke, Hosford guided her car into the infield while everyone else avoided any major altercations.

On the restart a traffic jam took place in turn four with half of the remaining field involved. Everyone was able to continue. Jim Smith sped to the point on the restart only to see the caution fly yet again for a tangle between Alan Hiefnar and Joey Langis. Then on the restart it was Mike Verhaagh and Blake Boyette tangling in turn one.

From that point it was all green as Smith made quick work of the field. Seth Adams was looking strong in a guest stint driving for Dave Fusco, moving up to second before falling out with mechanical ills late in the going. Kyle Pitts made a late charge but had to settle for second behind Smith who claimed his first career Legend Car feature win here.

Mitch Verhaagh capped a great run with a third place finish ahead of Hiefnar and his brother Mike Verhaagh. Sixth went to Langis while Sam Cornman, Gavin Sexton, Bob Wilson, Boyette, Cale Nolen, Adams and Hosford completed the finishing field.

It was another family affair in the Q Mini Stocks as Chris Narramore, Sr. took the lead from Bruce Cozad on the 17th lap then sped to victory over his son Chris Narramore, Jr. Cozad held on for third ahead of Fred Martin, Tav Gary, Duker Holley, T. J. Tanner and Donald Gatlin.

Douglas Harrin, Jr. dominated the Mini Cup feature for his second win in a row. Brey Holmes brought Bill Rychel’s machine home a distant second over Clay Samuels, Bryton Horner and Doug Higbie. Maria Martins did not start.
