Permatex TAFC/Follow A Dream Team Reaches Semifinals at Norwalk

MARSTONS MILLS, Massachusetts (May 27, 2017) – The Permatex Top Alcohol Funny Car/ Follow A Dream reaped a strong semifinal finish at this past weekend’s Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio.

With rain on Friday shortening the number of qualifying efforts from three to two, driver Phil Burkart qualified ninth for the event.

Burkart reached the semifinals and faced Andy Bohl. While Burkart had a better reaction time (0.053 vs. Bohl’s 0.074), his Chevrolet Camaro spun the tires about 200 feet into the run, allowing Bohl to take the win.
Burkart recorded a 258.32 mph/6.683 second pass, while Bohl had a winning 271.02 mph/5.514 second pass to advance to the final round.

“(Crew chief Anthony Terenzio) had the right setup and we ran real good, but just a touch aggressive in the semi’s and we spun the tires,” Follow A Dream team owner Jay Blake said.

At the same time, Blake said his team continued to learn more about how the car performs, what it likes and what it may use going forward for even better results and outcomes.

“Every time you make a lap, you learn more information,” Blake said. “Every lap is different so you’re always learning things you can carry forward.

“The more rounds you run, the more information you gain.”

Prior to the Norwalk race, Blake and his team visited the Permatex facility in Solon, Ohio. Then, a number of Permatex employees came out to the track during the weekend to cheer the team on. Also, the team welcomed visitors from the Travel Centers of America Service group.

Next on the Permatex /Follow A Dream team’s racing schedule is this weekend’s divisional race at Lebanon Valley Dragway in West Lebanon, New York. Blake is hoping for big things: his team has won four of the last five divisional races it has competed in at Lebanon Valley.

“Last year we won this race, so we’re hoping for another repeat,” Blake said. “The folks in Division I and there at Lebanon Valley do a great job prepping the track.”

After this weekend’s race at Lebanon Valley, the team hits the road again for the following weekend’s (July 7-9) NHRA national event at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Illinois – about 50 miles southwest of downtown Chicago.
That race holds special significance as it will include the Jegs All-Star Race, an event within an event, that Blake and the rest of the Follow A Dream team have a good shot at winning.

Another thing Blake is looking forward to will be after the Chicago race when he visits and gives a speech at the Illinois Tool Works headquarters – parent company of Permatex.

“We’ve got a lot of exciting things coming up in the next few weeks,” Blake said.

MOTHER NATURE WINS IN THE END BUT FOUR FRESH FACES STILL GRACE VICTORY LANE AT AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY

It looked like Auburndale Speedway was going to miss the rain that built up in the distance just after racing began but a light drizzle began to fall around
8:30 pm and with the precipitation expected to last a bit longer, coupled with very high humidity that would have made it difficult to dry the track, track officials canceled the remainder of the program after four features had been run. The Street Stocks, Mod Minis and Figure-8 cars would fall victim to the wet stuff, though.

As stated previously, four classes did get to complete their feature events and four drivers who either had not won in their class this year or had not won in awhile took home the checkered flag.

The Legend Cars saw just two of the cars out of the potent SAR Racing team at the track, one for last week’s winner Kyle Pitts while the other, the #5A car normally driven by new daddy Michael Cherry, was assigned to Bobby Diestler for the night.

Veteran driver Mike Verhaagh, who comes up from Ft. Myers to race here, had his new car running strong and won the heat race, coming out on top of a great four-way battle. Verhaagh had the pole for the feature but Diestler was on the outside pole and quickly jumped to the point with Verhaagh settling into second. As Diestler sped away from the field, Verhaagh was doing all he could to hold onto second before Pitts slipped under him on lap 14.

With no cautions in the race, Pitts was too far behind to do anything with his SAR teammate as Diestler hit his marks every lap and won by a comfortable margin. For Diestler it was his first Legend Car win (after only a handful of
starts) and just his second overall victory at Auburndale Speedway. Pitts raced home second with Mike Verhaagh getting his first podium finish of the year in third. Point leader Alan Hiefnar was fourth trailed by Mike Verhaagh’s brother Mitch Verhaagh in fifth. Rounding out the finishers were Dave Fusco, Blake Boyette (in Travis Guard’s #31) and Cale Nolen.

The Mini Stocks had a very interesting night to say the least. During the heat race, the fuel pump broke on point leader Chris Narramore’s machine and he thought his evening might be over as John Cummins, Jr. raced to the eight-lap heat win. Chuck Frazier offered his ride to Narramore for the feature but several drivers and crew members went to work and replaced the fuel pump on Narramore’s car to get him out in time for the 20-lap feature run.

Donald Gatlin, who gave everybody a scare the week before when he had to be taken to the hospital after he had trouble breathing, looked like a “new man”
out there in the feature as he bolted out front and looked like he had a chance of taking home his first win. However, the engine of his machine was not in tune with Gatlin’s heavy right foot and it expired in a plume of smoke going into turn one just after Gatlin had taken the crossed flags for half way bringing out the caution.

Bruce Cozad took over for three laps only to see the caution fly again for a turn three tangle involving Danny Leet and Fred Martin. There was some “bumping and grinding” following the restart and Cozad slowed with a flat tire to keep the caution out. After pitting for a “new shoe” Cozad returned to the rear of the line-up as Chuck Frazier took over the top spot.

Despite heavy pressure late from Narramore, Frazier held on to claim his first Mini Stock win of the year. Narramore and Colt Cecil were close behind in second and third while Cummins took the checker in fourth ahead of Cozad, Leet, Martin and Gatlin.

Clay Samuels found victory lane for the first time in quite some time in the Mini Cup feature race that ran green to checker. Heat race winner Douglas Herrin, Jr. was second ahead of Bill Rychel.

The Scramblers were on track when the rain began to fall but their race did run eight laps before the red flag came out. The field was actually under yellow at the time after Andy Travis and point leader Dustin Wilson had tangled in turn three. Before that, William Kerns and Keith Cantrill had been putting on a great side-by-side show for the lead. Kerns was leading at the completion of lap eight and thus was declared the winner, his first in quite some time. Heat race winner Cantrill was second followed by Bubba Healey, Wilson and Travis.

Although the Street Stocks and Mod Minis saw their feature races called due to the rain, they did get their respective heat races in with Steven O’Steen taking the checker first in the Street Stock heat while Kenny Nurse, Jr.
topped the Mod Mini heat race.

Auburndale Speedway will now be closed for Stock Car racing until September 9th. Many big events are scheduled for the fall racing season and the new Fellows Trucking Kids Club will debut on September 23rd.

Wallace Survives Tough Battle to get Parallax Power Supply Redbud 400 Victory

Salem, IN (June 26, 2017) – To say Saturday night’s Parallax Power Supply Redbud 400 Presented by Mitch Smith Auto Service and Perfecto at Anderson Speedway was a battle would be an understatement, is was a war, as two of the best short track racers in the country battled it out over the last portion of the event, including a final five lap shoot out that settled the war with former NASCAR competitor Stephen Wallace getting the ARCA/CRA Super Series Powered by JEGS win over 2016 CARS Super Late Model Tour Champion Raphael Lessard.

“Man what a race,” remarked an excited Wallace in victory lane. “That was some tough short track racing tonight. This is a big win for me, my dad and my uncle tried to get a win here in this event, but the best they ever finished was second. Lessard and I both leaned on each other a lot there at the end. I wasn’t going to just let him pass me and get the win, I was going to do whatever I needed to get back around him and get the win!”

Three time ARCA/CRA Super Series Champion Johnny VanDoorn was the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier and took the lead at the drop of the green flag from his pole starting position and led the first nine laps before Florida driver Jeff Choquette powered by to get the lead on lap nine.

Choquette looked to have the dominate car leading until a lap 125 restart, when VanDoorn managed to get by, but Choquette passed VanDoorn to regain the lead on lap 131 and pulled out to the largest lead anyone would enjoy all night. VanDoorn quickly faded and would then go to the pits for several laps for repair work on his car before returning to log laps before retiring from the event with a 13th place finish.

Choquette was working through the back of the field when he made contact with Jack Smith, who was the last car on the lead lap, resulting in both cars spinning and Choquette making connect with the outside wall ending his day on lap 179.

Florida racer Stephen Nasse took over the lead and led until Lessard went to the front on lap 213. Lessard would lead until pitting under yellow on lap 265. Wallace had pitted earlier and took over the lead on lap 266 and would stay out front, while from second on back was a constant battle over the next 100 laps.

A late caution set up the final run to the finish on lap 395. Lessard would get past Wallace on the first restart, but the caution flag flew, with the field going back to the previous lineup with no green flag scored, giving the point back to Wallace.
The pair took the green for what would be the events last restart, Wallace choose the outside where he would have more momentum and grip, giving the inside to Lessard. The two were side by side throughout lap 396. Slight contact between the two gave the lead to Lessard on lap 397, Wallace would then use the bump and run to grab the lead back on lap 398, from there Wallace would go on to get the win with both competitors cars showing signs of the tough battle.

“He’s a wild son of a gun,” Wallace said of Lessard after the race. “He raced me pretty clean, it was just the last five laps. I’m not going to turn over on my back and say, ‘Hey, you go win.’ We raced the hell out of each other, beat the crap out of our cars, but they’re all in one piece and we won the race.”

Besides the $10,000 first place payoff, Wallace also picked up a $5,000 bonus put up by Anderson Speedway if the event winner had never finished in the top five of an ARCA/CRA Super Series or JEGS/CRA All-Stars Toru race at Anderson Speedway before the 2017 season. Wallace picked up the AR Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award for his pit strategy that got him the lead. Wallace also picked up the Earnest Performance Lap Leader Award for leading the most laps.

Lessard would get passed by several more drivers after the contact from Wallace and ended up in fifth place.

“We had it won on that last restart,” remarked Lessard. “We both raced hard, but he hit me really hard and got me sideways after I took the lead, that’s the way he likes to race I guess. Will come back better and I’ll remember how he raced me next time!”

2011 Redbud 300 winner Steve Dorer would finish in second place, with his car showing the most damage of anyone in the top five. Dorer picked up a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award. Stephen Nasse would hold on to get a hard third third place finish and picked up the FLUIDYNE High Performance Cool Under Pressure Award. JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour competitor Jack Dossey III would finish in fourth place after battling back from a near spin after contact from Lessard that cost him a bunch of positions.

Eddie Van Meter would finish in sixth place after making several pit stops during the second half of the event to work on his race car. For all their hard work to keep Eddie on the lead lap and a sixth place finish, Van Meter’s pit crew received the PitBoxes.com Pit Crew of the Race Award.

Fred Hopkins would finish in seventh place, coming from his 21st starting position, which earned him a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award and the Hamner Racing Engines Hardcharger Award. 1997 series Champion Kenny Tweedy finished in eighth place, the last car on the lead lap, it was his first race with the series since 2013. Rookie Logan Runyon finished in ninth place and picked up his second Senneker Performance Rookie of the Race Award for the 2017 season.

The next ARCA/CRA Super Series event will be the Circle City 100 on Friday, July 21st at Lucas Oil Raceway. More information on all the CRA Series is available at www.cra-racing.com.

ROUSE & RIGGS COOK IT UP RIGHT FOR VICTORIES AT ORANGE COUNTY

ROUGEMONT, NC (June 25, 2017) – Saturday night’s CARS Tour event at Orange County Speedway was the perfect predecessor to the inaugural Mid-Atlantic Classic coming up at the facility in July. Cole Rouse survived a wild and hectic super late model feature to win his first race while also battling mechanical problems late in the race and local driver Layne Riggs captured his second career late model stock win dominating fashion during the Thrifty Tire Center / Puryear Tank Lines 300 presented by The Grilling Store.

SUPER LATE MODEL RECAP

With Mahle Pistons Pole Qualifying cancelled due to weather, Matt Craig and Cole Rouse were the fastest two in final practice, the session by which officials set the starting lineup. Craig quickly jumped out to the lead as a group of a half dozen cars separated themselves from the field in the early laps.

A handful of mid-race incidents thinned the field, beginning with a four-car melee in turn one on lap 46. Brandon Setzer and Lucas Jones came together, sweeping Tate Fogleman and Dan Speeney into the accident, too.

A little over fifty laps later, Trevor Noles and Casey Roderick came together in turn four, cutting the left rear tire of the No. 2 of Noles and causing him to spin into the wall in turn one. A lap later on the restart, Roderick and David Calabrese found one another on-track. The ensuing aftermath claimed Bradley McCaskill after he flew airborne over Calabrese’s car, plus Fogleman and Jody Measmer while Spencer Wauters and Gracie Trotter spun to avoid the carnage.

Rouse and Craig emerged as the two contenders once the proverbial dust settled, locking horns each lap around the lightning-quick facility. With 33 laps to go, Rouse moved to the inside of Craig in turn three and performed a textbook slide job to claim the lead.

In the final five laps, with over a two-second lead, Rouse’s car began to show smoke and Casey Roderick began to close in. Rouse was able to hold on to a narrow margin of victory to claim his first CARS Super Late Model Tour win and the fourth for Kyle Busch Motorsports at Orange County.

“We had enough until at the end when our tires got so over-inflated that it was so hard to make it through the entire corner without slipping,” Rouse said in Edelbrock Victory Lane. “I was so loose those last five laps or so and losing a lot of speed. I can’t thank all these guys enough, Toyota and KBM did a great job. We deserved a few wins this year and finally got one. It’s good to finally get a win since we deserved a lot and should’ve won three this year and a lot last year. So, yeah, this is for all these guys here.”
SUPER LATE MODEL RECAP
The late model stock feature lineup, much like super late model race, was set via practice speeds and had Josh Berry leading the field to green with Layne Riggs alongside. Berry won the drag race into turn one, but by the time the first circuit was completed, Riggs had wrestled the lead away from Berry and began to control the event.

Grayson Massey exploded an engine underneath of his No. 39 machine on lap 38, bringing out the first caution and subsequent red flag of the race. He escaped uninjured. Twenty laps later, Tommy Lemons, Jr., slowed with a flat right front tire, bringing out the second yellow flag of the event.

The field took the green flag for the final time with 91 laps remaining and Riggs once again was forced to duel with Josh Berry for the race lead. After a handful of side-by-side laps, Riggs cleared Berry and slowly began to pull away. Deac McCaskill passed Berry for second 19 laps later and made his attempt to reel in Riggs as the laps wound down.

Riggs caught traffic in the final ten laps, allowing McCaskill to pull within three quarters of a second, but used veteran-like maneuvers to slice through the slower cars, causing McCaskill’s hopes of victory to evaporate as he also was forced to navigate the cars racing for position. Riggs cruised to his second career victory and first at his home track by 1.456 seconds and extended his point lead over Anthony Alfredo who finished fifth.

“Oh, man, it’s just amazing to win at our home track,” Riggs remarked in Edelbrock Victory Lane, visibly holding back tears. “Thanks to everyone and all the sponsors who’ve helped us. Hopefully, we can get some more wins like this. I’m just ready to go to the next track, Tri-County. I felt like we were pretty good there last year, we sat on the outside pole and had some bad luck. I feel like Tri-County is probably most like this track than anywhere else, then we come back to Orange County, so it’s great for us and hopefully we can get some more finishes.”

The CARS Tour visits Tri-County Motor Speedway in Hudson, N.C., in two weeks time (July 8) for race seven of the tour’s 2017 schedule, the Do The Dew 200. The Tri-County event is followed by the inaugural $10,000-to-win Mid-Atlantic Classic on July 22, the series’ return visit to Orange County Speedway.

NOTES OF INTEREST:
– Local driver Craig Moore, who started 2017 with full plans of running the entire CARS Tour until an accident in the season opener nearly destroyed his car, was very impressive in the late model stock race while winning the Hard Charger Award. Moore started 14th and finished fourth at the end of the night.
– Tommy Lemons ran a race as a driver in the CARS Tour for the first time since Bristol. Lemons’ regular driver, Craig Stallard, was home assisting his family with relatively minor medical issues. Lemons gave the No. 42 a drive, however, and was challenging for a top five finish until a flat tire slowed his car. Other mechanical issues ultimately sidelined him prior to the finish.
– If there was an award for outstanding pit crew performance, Tate Fogleman’s crew would’ve won it hands-down on Saturday night. After destroying the entire front of his car on a lap 46 crash, the Fogleman crew used subsequent cautions to completely rebuild the front of the No. 8 Ford and exercise their “never give up” attitude. By the end of the night, the car had two new fenders, a bumper cover, hood and fender bracing just like it was unloaded, although with a few other other battle scars. By virtue of his crew’s exceptional attention to detail and performance under pressure, Tate was able to finish fourth on the lead lap.
– Bond Suss Racing fielded a super late model for Toyota Racing driver Gracie Trotter, a 15-year old Legend car standout, for the first time in her career. With little fanfare, Gracie piloted the No. 55 Camry to a top ten finish, the final car on the lead lap in eighth. Trotter is expected to make more full-size car starts.
