Saturday, June 19 VSP Bud Shootout Rained Out!
A terrible month of racing weather in Florida claimed another event Saturday night at Volusia Speedway Park (VSP) in Barberville, FL. The Bud Shootout 100 for Late Models was stopped before it was ever started.
A shower rolled in off the ocean just as the last hot lap session was getting underway. What started as a light sprinkle soon increased to heavy rain, turning the half mile dirt track into a mud bowl and the infield into a river. By 8:20pm, the announcement was made: "the show is cancelled."
Friday night, VSP squeezed in time trials for the late models as well as a mini stock feature despite the fact that most of Florida had rain. Twenty-three late models were on hand, much less than an expected 45 to 50. The threatening weather clearly kept away many stars from the National late Model Sportsman (NLMS) tour who had open weekend. VSP regular Eric Platt (Jacksonville, FL) was the first car onto the track for qualifying and he set fast time earning the pole position. Visitor Wesley Hood (Cowpens, SC) captured the outside pole.
A full field of hobby stocks as well as street stocks and pure stocks were also in attendance Saturday night. The makeup date for the Bud Shootout 100 is July 10. Rainchecks from June 19 will be honored on that date. July 10 is another open date on the NLMS tour, so many series regulars can again be expected to race. It is unknown at this time if the late models will re-qualify for that show or stand on Friday's qualifying results. More information on this subject will follow.
Next Saturday, VSP will host the Florida Mini Sprints plus a full race program starting at 8pm. The track will be closed July 3 because of the Pepsi 400 in Daytona. Also on the VSP calendar is the World Championship Hobby Stock 100 on July 30 through August 1. The first of its kind event will pay $10,000 to the winner.
