July 1, 1999 SEVERAL LOCAL DRIVERS SCORING BIG POINTS IN NASCAR REGIONAL STANDINGS
ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA - Two St. Augustine Speedway regulars continue to score very high marks in the Sunbelt Region's ShorTrack Series by NASCAR and the NASCAR Winston Racing Series point standings. George Thrift III, of Fernandina Beach, Fla. competing in the Muffler Man Modified Division at the local speed plant is currently in second place in the Sunbelt Region's ShorTrack Series with a Competition Point Index of .7627 after 12 events. Thrift has captured eight wins, nine top fives and ten top ten finishes so far this year.
Oglethorpe (Ga.) Speedway's Lloyd Williams III leads the ShorTrack standings with a .8333 CPI.
Jacksonville, Fla.'s Jamie Carter is another St. Augustine regular showing in the top 20 of the ShorTrack Series point standings. Carter's .5405 CPI places him 16th after 13 events, scoring six top fives and nine top ten finishes. Thrift and Carter are currently running first and second in the Speedway's Modified Division point standings, respectively.
St. Augustine native Kenny Hall, competes in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Snap-On Sportsman Division at the St. Augustine ½ mile and holds down the sixth spot in the Winston Racing Series Sunbelt Region with 13 starts, four wins, ten top fives, 11 top ten finishes and a CPI of .7195. Tiny Cline, of St. Augustine also shows in the top 20 standings coming in at 17th with a CPI of .6426. Las Vegas Motor Speedway's Scotty Gafforini continues his stranglehold on the top spot in the region's standings with a CPI of .8460. The Gatorade Front Runner Award, a $1000 bonus paid to the halfway leader in each region in the Winston Racing Series will be awarded on Wednesday, July 14. An additional $1000 will be paid the national halfway leader of the ShorTrack Series on Friday, July 23. St. Augustine Speedway is one of ten tracks in the Sunbelt Region that range from Florida, South Carolina and Georgia on the East Coast, through Alabama and on to Texas, Arizona and Nevada. The teams are competing for a total of more than $1.4 million in the Winston Racing Series National Championship race, with the winner collecting more than $143,200 in prize money. St. Augustine Speedway will be closed for the 4th of July holiday due to the extraordinary interest in the Daytona International Speedway event that same day.
