June 2, 1999 SARA HEADS FOR ST. AUGUSTINE DEBUT The S.A.R.A. (Southern Automobile Racing Association) Key Bank and Trust Late Model Series is scheduled to make their first ever visit to the St. Augustine Speedway on June 26. The Central Mobile Homes 100 for the S.A.R.A. teams will headline the evening's events that will also include the regular lineup of Snap-On Sportsman, Rick the Muffler Man Modifieds, Thunder Trucks, Mini Stocks and Hobby Stocks.
More than 30 entries are expected to be on hand to contest the 24 starting positions in the 100-lap feature. Preliminary entry lists indicate that former Late Model Champion, Dwayne Dempsey, of St. Petersburg, Fla. and 1994 Lakeland Ledger Driver of the year, Wayne Morris, of Mulberry, Fla. will be among the many SARA regulars that will be here to take a shot at the winners share of the $10,200 purse. Dempsey leads the points chase with Morris a close second. Rookie Bryan Washburn, of Davie, Fl. is in third followed by another series rookie Jeff Scofield, of Riverview and Kevin Durden, Archer, Fl. St. Augustine’s fast half mile speedway should prove to an very exciting venue for the SARA Late Models. St. Augustine Speedway is a high banked D shaped oval with great seating all around the track. Local St. Augustine Speedway Late Model standouts, David Clegg, David Showers and Scott Lagasse are also expected to be on hand for the marathon event and are well prepared to defend their home turf against the invading tour.
Grandstand gates will open at 2:30 PM with qualifying getting started at 6 PM. Qualifying heats for both, the local divisions and the S.A.R.A. Late Models will roll off at 7 PM and the features will be getting underway promptly at 7:45 PM.
