January 26, 1999 John Kaiser NLMS ANNOUNCES EXCITING 1999 SCHEDULE
Kathleen, Ga. - The National Late Model Sportsman Series today announced its full schedule for the 1999 racing season. Encompassed on the schedule are some familiar tracks, some exciting new venues and a return to some tracks that have been off the series schedule over the last year or two.
As the National Late Model Sportsman Series enters its fifth year of operation in the Southeastern United States, the guiding premise of the series continues to be economically feasible and highly competitive Late Model racing. Total purses for the 1999 season will approach $400,000 providing plenty of opportunity for area racers who follow the series. All events, except for two, for the 1999 season will be two day affairs, have a race length of 100 lap races and will pay $5,000 to win and $325 to start.
The series has an exciting new track to visit early on in the season as it heads to Dublin, Ga. and 441 Speedway. While the series raced at 441 in previous years, it was then a dirt track, now the surface the racers will be facing is asphalt, making it the first of two pavement races on the 1999 schedule. The series will once again return to Columbia Motorsports Park in Lake City, Fla. for the highly successful and tremendously exciting “Dirt Cars on Asphalt” event that has been a staple of the NLMS season over the last four years.
Another new venue for the series will be the high banks of East Alabama Motor Speedway. This fast 3/8ths mile clay track, home of the National 100, will feature a 50 lap event on Saturday night following a Friday night 50 lapper at Penton Raceway, the first Alabama track to host the series. The series will also return to Cordele (Ga.) Speedway after a three year hiatus. New Track Manager Joe Wray has always provided a superb racing surface when he managed Cochran (Ga.) Speedway and with two dates at each track, the central Georgia area will have ample opportunity to see the stars and cars of the most competitive series in the Southeast.
The 1999 Season will end this year at Savannah, Ga.’s Oglethorpe Speedway Park with the “Rumble on the River”. This event, which pays $10,000 to the winner is always an exciting one and it this year will be no exception. The series will also visit Oglethorpe on two other occasions during the season. Returning to the series schedule are Waycross (Ga.) Motor Speedway, Cochran Speedway, Lake City (Fla.) Speedway, Thunderbowl Speedway in Valdosta, Ga., and Golden Isle Speedway in Brunswick, Ga. which will host the series over the July 4th weekend.
There are still two dates on the schedule to be filled, and there are three or four tracks interested in taking those dates. However it is NLMS policy to not announce a date until contracts are signed by both parties. As soon as these dates become firm, information will be made available to all interested parties.
