January 28, 1999 Jacobs Takes First Night Honors
Kenny Jacobs held off a last lap challenge from Kenny Adams to take top honors in the first night of the inaugural "King of the 360's" winternational event at East Bay Raceway.
Jacobs made the trip from Holmesville, Ohio worthwhile picking up over $2500 in only the first night. Jacobs, driving the Holbrook Motorsports entry qualified in the fourth position giving him the front starting spot in the Jean Lynch Appreciation, $1000 Dash for Cash. Jacobs easily jumped out to the lead and never looked back.
The main event was slowed by several cautions and a couple red flags during its 25 laps. They were no serious injuries but, several cars ended up on their sides. The most spectacular crash came on the seventh lap when Ernie Teed flipped his American Well Drilling mount several times in turn one.
East Bay Raceway's 1998 Sprint car champion, Kenny Adams, driving the Joe Hare Racing #88 set a new track record with an elapsed time of 14.435 seconds looked like the man to beat.
Adams started in the sixth position and quickly moved to third, right on the bumper of Sport Allen in the American Well Drilling #42x. With only five laps remaining, Adams finally got by Allen and made his charge on Jacobs, who had pulled out to a full straightaway lead. Adams pulled himself into position to win, with the help of lapped traffic. On the final two turns Adams tried to slingshot past Jacobs on the outside, to the roar of the crowd. Jacobs was able to hold on for the win by mere inches.
"I knew someone was there, but I didn't know how close he was," said Jacobs who is hoping to continue his winning performance tonight and tomorrow. Adams stated, " We definitely would have liked to have another lap." He will get his chance tonight.
