Jan 25, 1999 C lassic Cars Prepares for 1999 Racing Season The 1999 racing season is about to begin with the latest version of Speedweeks. The Classic Automobile Racing Series starts it season February 6 at Lake City Speedway’s dirt track facility. The Saturday night show will be followed by a Sunday afternoon show on February 7. The Sunday race will be a National Points race for the CARS.
Ocala Speedway hosts the Classic Cars beginning Wednesday, February 10 thru 13th, with racing each night including the National Points race on the 13th. Drivers from Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and Tennessee will be on hand.
This highly competitive and entertaining series runs full bodied race cars, using 305 motors, and very tight rules. The result is the cars are very close in performance and driver skill becomes all important.
The CARS series started in Nashville in 1992, and the Florida chapter was formed in 1994 by Randell and TK Grief, cousins who share a passion for racing and vintage cars. Since that time Randell and TK have taken on the task of managing the National Cars series, and have worked to expand the Series. The Cars series fields 25-30 cars per race during Speedweeks and the Florida series usually has a car count of 18-20 during the season.
According to TK Grief, the reasons people get involved racing these machines is their economy, the speed range, and their closeness in appearance to the race cars of the “old days”. |

You can get into a Classic Car which is full fledged race car for $5000 or so, run at speeds up to 90 MPH on half mile tracks, run on dirt or asphalt, and turn heads. A lot of the drivers in the CARS Series are old timers who still have fun turning left. The maturity, average age around 40 something, may have something to do with the stability of the series.
Not that it hurts to be operated by the Grief cousins, who have many years in promotion, advertising, and marketing. Since they have been running the series on a national level, the CARS series have built a solid reputation, and the series has grown.
You can find out more about the CARS on the Florida Stock Car Racing Series page. Follow the 1999 season in pictures and words here as the reports will follow shortly after each race. -Jack Smith |
